View Full Version : Particles won't display anymore!

Hi everyone,

I really need to ask this question here. Yesterday I spent hours looking everywhere for the answer to this issue however, I did not find anything that helped, so here it goes. I had some 'sprite particles' working just fine, and suddenly, right after I keyed the rotation of the volume emitter from which they were being emitted, at frame 1 and then at frame 300 the particles were GONE once I started the animation.

The emitter and the particle shape nodes can be seen in the "Outliner' however, they won't show when I click the "Play" button or render them. I also checked the Window>Relationship Editor>Dynamic Relationship to see if the connection between them got broken or something but they seem to be fine. I have also tried changing "Particle render type" to every single one on the list, but nothing worked.

Has anyone seen something like this before. I think it's a bug but I am not sure. It happened to me before. I think I had multi-points or multi-streaks particles few months ago when it happened but I did not care too much.

Hope I gave enough information about this, but if you need me to give you step by step I will be happy to do so. I've worked with particles in Maya a lot, but I've only encountered this problem since working in Maya 8.

Cheers!

In order to make simulation work for particles, your playblast should play frame by frame.
If you set this up and still dont' have any particles, please post scene, I'll look at it...

Hi there Als (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=35768),

Thanks for your suggestion. I always play my particles or any kind of simulation every frame. I have been using Maya for about 5 years now, and I have been working with particle effects for quiet some time so, I have tried any possible thing you can imagine to get the particles to show up once they have disappeared. I mentioned before this issue have happened to me maybe 3 times since I have been using Maya. Thanks again for your comments. I will try to reproduce the bug save the scene and post the file for people to check it out. late

So sorry,
there is lot's of students in this thread recently, so one can make mistake like this.
Here is few suggestions I have:

1. Is it possible that some group the emitter or particles are under is scaled or has changed, is emitter under group and scalled? Have you checked if maya changed value on shear under some of the groups?
2. Can you see that particles are in the particle count? How many particles are there?
3. Are particles cached? Maybe you are refering to particles and they are deleted from hard disk, or computer can't see them for some other reason?
4. Can you get to component selection for particles? In component editor, you can find out if the have some crazy numbers for x,y,z world positions, or they say infinite or some other silly number like that.
5. Have you switched off emit by scale thing? This can make number of particles to drop rapidly to silly small number.
6. Which version of maya are you using?
7. When you select particles, and press "f" to frame on them, can you see them if you switch bounding box on? Does it give you bounding box value?

Hope that some of these help, if not post the cut down of the file...

Hi there Als,

It's all good man!
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but here I am

1. Is it possible that some group the
emitter or particles are under is scaled
or has changed, is emitter under group
and scaled? Have you checked if maya
changed value on shear under some of the
groups? Yes, I did check that and it seems to be same as before I added any key frames or before I moved the slider from frame 1 to frame 300.

2. Can you see that particles are in th
e particle count? How many particles
are there? I can't remember if I checked the "particle count" field but I think I did.

3. Are particles cached? Maybe you are
refering to particles and they are deleted
No, I did not have the particles chached for this project.

4. Can you get to component selection
for particles? In component editor,
you can find out if the have some crazy
numbers for x,y,z world positions, or
they say infinite or some other silly
number like that. I can't remember if this one had a crazy number however I will check this field next time.

5. Have you switched off emit by scale
thing? This can make number of particles
to drop rapidly to silly small number.
No, I don't really work with emit by scale object. It puts way too many particles in the scene but thanks for mentioning this point.

6. Which version of maya are you using?
I am using Maya 8.0

7. When you select particles, and press
"f" to frame on them, can you see them
if you switch bounding box on? Does it
give you bounding box value? I can see the bounding box but no particles.

Thanks a lot Als you have been very helpful. I will try to reproduce this bug and I will keep in mind all the tips you gave me, cheers
