I've been using Divx or Xvid for test encodes because they render and encode in one step through the Max interface. I'd prefer to use wmv8 or wmv9 (Windows Media Encoder) but it's not available under the video compression drop-down when selecting the render output file. Is there any way to encode in wmv8 or wmv9 in one step through Max?

As far as I have seen, you cannot encode in WMV format unless you have the encoding studio from microsoft. There is not an option to do it on the fly in the render. It would be like trying to render straight to realVideo.

I do have the standalone wm encoder, but it would be nice to be able to encode on the fly. I wonder why divx and xvid can do it but wme can't.
