Title: Heavymetal
Name: pascal blanché
Country: Canada
Software:

the tittle says it all...
im huge fan of heavymetal's 80's covers, when such big names like Moebius, Caza, Druillet where still working on the french original magazine Metal hurlant
and heavy metal's where done by Bisley, Corben,Liberatore...
A great and inspirationnal time :)
i wanted the guy to look powerfull, so i used some photos from aireplanes for the textures
( yes he looks like cyclop from Xmen, but hey im a comics fanboy too:P)
As usual, modelled with 3dsmax and mudbox, rendered with vray, touched ups on photoshop of course ;)

comments welcome ;)

haha! niice!

If we close our eys a second the "metalhurlant" logo title appears on top ^^
sight! great "souvenir"

You must have had a lot of pleasure to do this one. It's cool!
I love the screaming druillet face you gave him. Even the little nose ^^

And it's just so cool, you reanimatored thoose stong flat colorfull lines (laser, star tatoo, rouflaquette noir).

Volumes are done like a child of corben or liberatore!

If all thoose artists where younger, I bet they'd give a try to 3d (well corben did a bit)

I have a little question: the details from mechanicals, are they poly modelised in max or done with mudbox?

(edit:
oops i forgot: 5stars for the metal hurlant child
thanks for sharing, I allready know what i'll be reading before sleeping tonight^^)

Looks really cool, Pascal! How do you manage to be so productive? You just keep on crunching out one new piece after another... :)

My only crit would be that the light beam from his eyes looks a little flat and doesn't quite fit with the rest of the image. If you worked a little bit more with it to give it some more energy and glow, and maybe added a lightpass on the character to give it some light from the beam, it would fit much better together as a whole.

But overall a sweet piece with great details and composition.

Sorry.
To be honest, I can´t find anything exceptional in this image.
I liked your works a lot Pascal, the mermaid etc. - but this model looks like a dirty, distorted and quick mesh. The single parts look like they simply overlap - the don´t seem to be modelled as a fitting unit. Usually I´d say it´s a first character of a noob.

But you will still get plugged on the front page, as always.... :-/

Pascal I'll apologise if ever sounding like a fanboy, but I just love your work.
Really cool cover (* * * * *)
As a crit, maybe people are referring to the cyclops left shoulder looking a little distorted.
No problem with it here, still don't think it detracts from the final impact of the resulting image.

I also get very inpired by "Metal Hurlant" and Moebius, Bilal, Giger, and Judge Dredd.
I'm a bit of a long way from producing cg work that's worthy of posting here yet.
But it's been fun learning any case, and surely great to see this kind of work making the headlines.
It's like a carrot at the end of the stick to me.

I'll be hoping to join in on this gallery someday :buttrock:

@shtl: thanks! yes i have some corben books where he used to create his characters and scenery out of clay! i have some collectors of metal hurlant too, like the one with a Giger cover about Lovecraft :)

@banshee:
I understand your point, but you know, im not the technical guy, never will be.
Yes it is a quick mesh, but to my eyes, it delivers its purpose.. I like creating rough visions and avoid realistic and seamless modelling..

Call it 3D collage ;)

I think that this is one of your best work here.. really art.. I LOVE the flat yellow look of the beam. The combination of blue and yellow is great..

I don't fancy the, in my opinion way too, loose anatomy and volumes, however, it still strikes me, so, it's good :)

So, to crit: the shoulder close to the camera is way too loose and chunky/bulgy, could use some more work. But if it was intentional, style wise, then no worries.

Also the textures seem rather pasted atop of the render and blended in PS rather than actually rendered. Donno, again, might be the style.

I'm a bit more technical guy, so I see these as, let's not say mistakes, but minor deficiencies :)

Anyways, it's a cool render, man, sohttp://forums.cgsociety.org/images/rating/rating_4.gif from me

That is great. This is very much Druillet character style which I really like. This come as well with a great mood of Metal Hurlant 1970-80 style. Very graphic  Me it is the opposite I was not a big fan of your mermaid etc... style (even though I quite like a few of them of course), but I really like your new style over the last 3-4 illustrations.

well this one got people talking:) thats allway a proof the work is delivering:)
imho i allways loved the graphical quallity of your work, and this one has it for shure-
i dont like the shoulder (it is a bit flat and lacks proper muscle definition), but other than this you have another winner:)
would be proud to call it my own!:)
4 stars for this one

Nice one Pascal! Love the feel of it, it has a lot of emotional punch.

If I were to change anything, I'd agree about inflating the close shoulder a bit to make it rounder, and maybe add a little extra detail to the energy beam from the eyes, but not too much detail, you don't want to lose the nice graphic nature of the beam.

In my opinion, modeling should be all about the final purpose. If your model appears like it's being made for production use (for example, it's on a turntable, not textured with a simple 3 point lighting setup), then stuff like overlaps is a bad thing, since it's probably going to be skinned and animated, and presumidly going to be used for some application where you're trying to trick the viewer into believing what they're seeing is photoreal. If the model is obviously there for a fine arts piece, to convey some sort of mood or idea, or is concept art, then overlaps are fine, because the important part of the image isn't whether it's modeled perfectly, the important parts are the color, composition, and texture. So overlaps in this piece is perfectly fine to me.

Thx for the kind comment Neil :)

actually the shoulder was flat on purpose, but it seems like i should have overexagerated it, more like an armor plating or something... ill comme back on that soon, as well as adding little details that now anoys me :P

Before someone referred to that thing as a 'light beam' I was thinking that the guy got stabbed in his head by an overheated iron rail. Hehe. BTW Pascal, any news on 'Machine Phase'?

Still, a graphic novel would be interresting to do .. it's on my wish list ;)

I must say that I always look at your art as a way of transfering different moods/emotions, never approaching to it from a technical angle. I am not one of those who are saying: OMG, Pascal you are the best, etc. But still, I think that this is very good work. This is a period in 3d where people seek more details and realism, and sometimes, they forget that there is artistic side of our work, so it is very good that there are people like you.
Regading this work, I really like that impression of half-comics / half-socialist realism style.

Great image,
I love your style, and as soon as I saw the picture, even before reading the post, I felt a resemblance with the color style of Liberatore, in particular the first two RanXerox.
Even though you don't need them from me congratulations.

Hey, Pascal, i am really an oldtime fan of your art and character design, i really like the way you work with colours. This work i think is not your best, but still is a great and powerfull image. I agree with you, i think the shape, colours and a rogh stylisation is much better then non expressive perfect modeled heads we see everyday on the internet. It should be more about the art than the technic. (i am not saying technic is not important, just think art is more important)

Bonjour Pascal,

I have always been a fan of your work, even the logo that flashes in my face every time I boot up 3ds max:D . This one is no exception; you have really captured the feel of the feu Heavy Metal magazine. He does look like a mix between Ranxerox and Cyclop isn't it? A comment more than a critique, I do find that this image doesn't have your usual illustrative feel and glow. Il est vraiment très bien par contre. Je t'envie.

Pretty cool character Pascal, not my favorite from your works, but anyway a great piece, now i really understand why i like your work, as you said, you're not technical guy, and you never will be... but with this "dirty" mesh, you give an emotion and it's for me your best point, with 1 character, a little background sometimes, but with amazing style, light and color, you give us emotion, you're more an artist than a technical guy....

So good job, and i'm waiting to see more!!!

I like the image, is great, but as I huge fan of heavy metal magazine, I must say you choose the wrong theme, you should put one of those amazing women, that´s what heavy metal is all about....ahhh those women....

thoses days Heavymetal's cover arts are all about pinups,it was not always like this back in 80's... But i will surely continue to dig a little more in this style, so next one should be more sexy ;)

I want this piece for my desktop.

I love the piece, especailly the use of color. The flat color lazer beam is a great idea.

I would say that im more of a technical 3d artist than a creative one but your work inspires me to keep trying to be creative and to produce peices of art that grab attention.

your portfolio is one the best ive seen.

Cool image reminds me Ranxerox.
I dont like the chest area. Maybe too much symmetry ( pectoral muscles ) and the volumes are "exaggerated" ( too much of push). Maybe if we could see the neck transition it would become less "splited".
Nice work!
