View Full Version : Animation: 'Kids'
shoey 03-02-2003, 07:47 PM Hey folks, This is my first real attempt at an animation like this. It was built as part of my final year project at the University of Teesside. ‘Kids’ is based on a poem by Spike Milligan. It is about a little girl sat at the kitchen table eating her tea. Her mother is watching and always corrects the girl’s actions.
The sound is a bit crappy and i know of a few errors that i need to go back and fix but i've run out of time on it so this will be my final hand in.
C&C very welcome.
[Edit: uploaded an xvid mpeg4 file too]
The original file is DivX5.0.3, 5.5mb, and is HERE (http://www.philshoebottom.co.uk/Art/smalldivx.avi)
The second file is an Xvid mpeg 4, 7.4mb, and is HERE (http://www.philshoebottom.co.uk/Art/smallmpeg.avi)
Here's a still from it. Some of you will have seen it in the WIP section.

link works vid don't :(
shoey afaik it is all beacause of what program you use for playback, the new divx codec is optimized to work with DivXPlayer.
I aswell have suffered from this problem @ highres divx in windows mediaplayer but usually works out great in divx player.
I'll watch your avi soon, d/l.

The video works for me. looks pretty good, i really like the kitchen atmosphere. i think you need some holds, the girl seems to be squirming around a bit too much...
I've had problems with divx too....I guess theres a big difference between 5.02 and 5.03....and it seems to not be backwards compatible.
:surprised
Hey, for me that vid worked excellent! great work (in win mediaplayer).

Hey guyz, a I really recommend a xvid codec, similar do divx, but much better, it's easy to get better image quality. Screenshot of this little girl looks pretty nice, I like colours and composition...I hope I will see video soon (download in progress...) :airguitar
:applause: Great, I loved it. That girls too cute. Animation is cool too. Well, her voice somehow destroyed it a little, it sounds weird. Also that sample of childrens laughter and scream is strange. Try to find a little girl to give your creation a better voice. Maybe some relative.
But modelling and lighting is really perfect.

Well Done Short Film, Really!
I always like these kind of questions children keep doing :)
Animation is pretty good, could be better, but it's good enough. I agree that audio side could be better. The whole thing is kinda weird, because of samples..Try find other ones.
But man...we are CGI artists here, and all I can say:  Good Work!

works great for me, no problems. Make sure you have the latest version of DivX installed, it is a known issue.
I like this animation a lot. The laugh seems fine to me, however the scream could use a lot of work. Also there should be more of a bang when she and the chair hit the floor.
The voice could also use some work. Other than that, really nice!

Very nice. It reminded me of puppet animation. The kind of stop motion thing you would see in an animation festival.
I really like the use of the refrigerator magnets for the end credits.
Well done!!

Thanks everyone for all your comments. I agree that the sound still needs a lot of work but it was the best i couls do at the time. As for the problems with the file i've made another for anyone who had a problem.
I hope you can all get to see it now, if not let me know and i'll put DivX 5.0 back on.

Lovely piece. Maybe more exaggerated facial expressions. I watch my niece all the time, and she's about 6, and man, her face is so animated!
nice work phil, enjoyed it much :P

You're most welcome :) And I really liked this animation, my fiancee deals with kids all day long and its always refreshing to see kids in animations :) The only things I think you need to focus on more next time is the lip sync and the body lanugage when people speak, especially lil tykes like this one :D It's too linear you have to soften up the curves more. Also that voice is way to mature :p . Great job nonetheless tho.
