View Full Version : city rendering

i am rendering part of a city containing lots of skyscrapers. the have a dgs assigned to them with the diffuse and specular reflection slot turned on. But even without the glossy relfection, it is taking ages to render the dgs surfaces.
i tried to lower the max trace depth...still to long
i tried to plug the dgs to ctrl_ray shader....still to long
what can i do?

Try to use the mib_glossy with glossy disabled, or even better use the new architecture and design shader, both have localized aliasing settings to have more optimized rendering, also check out bsp settings if your cityscape is huge, can give a 50 percent boost. To go further you could also render from commandline.

You are right about the bsp, i always use that method when it comes to speeding rendering time, but it doesn't seem to have the same effect with alot of reflective surfaces in the scene.
Concerning the mib_glossy, it speeds the render a little (up to 10 %).
i don't have Maya 8,5 for the mia materials.
i guess there's no other solution for maya 7.0
thanks for your reply.

read through this post on mymentalray.com. theres a huge thread about getting the arch and design shader working in maya 8, and im pretty sure yashu got it working in 7 as well. read through it, i think the link to the download is on page 3 or 4. there should be a maya 7 setup in the download.

ok, finally in maya 8.5 i used the same shader to render 5o reflection surfaces as in maya 7.0 (mib_glossy without glossy) and it took amazingly 50% less time to render.
i think this is due to the difference between mental ray 3.4 and 3.4 when it comes to calculating rays.
if only i could find a workaround in maya 7.0 to acheive the same speed...

i dont know how hard it would be for you to move your existing shaders to a mia_material, but you may want to consider that over the mib_glossy. you can turn on the interpolate modes for reflections and blur them without a serious render hit. the docs in 8.5 go over the mia_material in great detail.

mib glossy is rendring much more faster tha mia_materials in 8.5
