OK, I think a lot of people, myself included, would like a clear answer from someone who already owns Maya:

Is it required to purchase an annual support contract to continue to use Maya, or is it an option for those who want support?

I only have a student license, but I have always understood maintenance contracts to be an option, not mandatory.

Not mandatory, you just dont get support or upgrades.
