I was wondering how much of a slow down/speed up instancing actualy gives to a scene and if it's worth making things just pure polygon models.
The thing is I started a scene last night and at the moment it's comprised of 1/2 a corridoor that has a hanging light (with a light source) and 2 vents on a wall (one an instance of the other), this is mirrored and then the mirror is instanced twice along the lenght. I've then got several seperate volumetric lights shining through some of the vents.
Now I've no problem with this until I make the lights visible in the editor at which point I get a major slowdown.

I was wondering if this is actualy related to having instances inside instances because I've had higher poly scenes with plenty of lighting that had no instances that didn't give this slowdown... or is it possibly because I'm instancing a light aswell.

It's not a really big deal but it'd be nice to be able to see all might lights while I'm arranging another.

Also does anyone have any tips on how to cut this sort of lag down with instancing (excluding turning them off;))?

dunno about this...but would like to know answers...so ignore my reply...just subscribing to thread.

i would assume the point of instancing is to reduce lag...so i may just be the shear quantity of instances....and how many polys to the original instance. don't forget the volumetric lights are causing lag....i woulda thought. what if you try an narrow out each area...basic lights, instances and then compare speed diff etc.
