actually most people activate final gathering just to get that specific color bleeding effect.
but if you want to reduce it you should look for some kind of irradiance settings in your objects shaders. i havent done FG with mr for maya but know FG in XSI.

In XSI irradiance is a material property (maya talk: a shader attribute) that allows changing the intensity of the final gathering effect (e.g. the color bleeding effects) of that specific material/shader without messings with its color, texture or illumination. so try to find that setting, it should exist somewhere in maya (unless mr for maya 1.5 sucks).

Floor shader > Mental Ray > Irradiance Color to scale FG effect down without adjusting material properties.
