Title: Portrait of The Demon Guard
Name: Julianna Kolakis
Country: Canada
Software: Deep Paint, mental ray, Photoshop, XSI, ZBrush
So here’s the last model from my demo reel which I’ve completed!
The Demon Guard is half demon- half snake, and was the one in charge of the huge plot to capture an ancient beast, which belongs to The Goddess Sovanna. He keeps the beast hostage waiting for the right opportunity to destroy Sovanna, as she is slowly being lead into his perfect trap…
I modeled the base mesh in XSI, sculpted in mudbox, painted the detailed texture all in zbrush, touched up the seams in photoshop & deep paint 3d, and rendered it with mental ray.

Woohoo :applause:, glad to see the demon finally finished july!.
I think you did a great job with the character.
I love the detail of his skin and the eyes.... you are great at making eyes.
The amount of detail you put in this guy is just amazing.
The design is great too, although a bit busy for my personal taste, but I think in this case works nicely because of the nature of this monster.
Two thumbs up :thumbsup::thumbsup:.
I promise I will write an e-mail soon... been busy lately.
Best of luck and congrats on another excellent job.

Thats awesome, incredibly creative! I love the style, I thought it was a 2d painting at first. I spent much of my early years creating monsters, now the tools are ready to really bring them to life, thanks for this very inspiring.

Very impressive I must say Julie, so much detail:buttrock:, and yet its pretty elegant, I like it a lot, also it shows that you can do crazy demonic stuff too:twisted:, very nice smile, he should be grabing a colgate tooth paste, would be a cool hahah, no.
Very inspireing, :applause:, it looks really awesome in the reel as well, cant wait till you post it here, front page for sure!

Can you post a uv map please?
I ask you a uv map because i have some problem whit disp map made in zbrush: don't work very well in lightwave.
I think that dipend uvmap, because sometimes disp map work and sometimes don't work!

Hi Shaun, thank you so much for the sweet words! The reel’s looking aweome, and I’m really looking forward to seeing more from you as well.
Gega
I actually didn’t use a displacement map for this model. The uv’s are pretty heavy as well so I’m afraid it wouldn’t be of any use. Good luck though, I’m sure you’ll figure it out sooner or later.
Thanks to everyone else for commenting too! Glad to know you all like the design and that the detail isn't too over the top :)

All I can say is absolutely stunning! I only hope that one day my models will look half as good as this guy! I was wondering, I wanted to see your demo reel? Is there a link out there someplace were I might take a gander? I went to your web site and all I found was a fantastic splash screen!
Anyways, Great work. Your style on this latest models reminds me of my favorite concept artist. I don’t know if have ever run across his work but you should check him out ( John Blanche ) I don’t know but I think that you are giving him a run for the money.
Keep It up!

I like this. Not quite as strong as the other two though, so I think it should be put last in the reel. I would have made bigger teeth that varied in size more. But that's just me. How long is VFS? It seems people graduate awfully quickly from there.

Amazing fantasy work. I am definitely looking forward to your demo reel.
As one person who signed your guestbook simply put: you'll get to work where you want, when you want and how much you want, i'd toast to that.
To give you my 2 cents, i wouldn't rely too much on texturing in zbrush alone as much. Zbrush 2.0 doesn't have too many tools yet in their coloring department as well as to use photographic textures comes awfully hard to do in zbrush. I would do mostly everything in photoshop. You could also do more work on your shaders and use more maps with more complex render tree setups to give more of a realistic render of the material. With that in mind, i do believe your work can definitely fit for the big screen.
Cheers.

I am wondering something. How much do you push up the SUbdiv for displacement? I have myself hard time with rendering with displacement in MR to get a decent render time. I am using Maya, so MR have better integration in XSI so perhaps it changes the render time?

Hi,
Incredible model and awesome render.
I just have one comment. Personally I the final render looks almost like something done only in photohop or on paper and the postprocessed through a computer. The model is lost under the texture and the model is so freakin' super awesome amazing:applause::bounce::thumbsup:. In fact I like detail models more than the final - they seem more alive.
But that's just my opinion.
Again amazing work - I wish I was that good.

this demon it self is my favorite character from ur reel (of corse the other is exelent also)!
the one thing
that I have to crit is
the rock set it self (the bg)
it need more work in color and bumpy detail
you may want to render it seperarately and rebalance the color)
but I believe that U like the character more :) and I know u really dedicated on ur artwork/styles.
Wish u luck in the future :)

wow thank you so much everyone, I’m so flattered to hear your views on my piece! Truly means a lot :) Thanks for the stars and the support~!
DKCrame
I thought the textures overpowered the sculpt as well, but I didn’t complain since the overall look turned out the way I wanted it to. Next time I would like to bring out the features in my mesh a lot more, so there a few things I’d definitely change.
GonzaloGolpe
oh his work is great! It’s probably the twisted look of the four eyes that reminds you of his stuff? Either way thank you, I take that as a compliment :)

Nathan! Hey man, so glad you liked this piece. Been busy, but I’ll be getting back to you soon!
Raul-Reznek
Ah you know what? I should’ve painted over the eyes! The transparent spheres weren’t resized after sculpting the eyelids a bit closer together, so the reflected spotlights extend a bit over the skin. So silly, thought no one would mind... or really notice. Perhaps that’s what seems a bit off?
SpliffmanCometh
Cliff thanks for the kind words.

I came up with the concept last year, and it took me a few weeks to nail the design. I proxied out the model right after and kept it as a placeholder in my demo reel as I worked on the other two characters. I redid the base mesh near the end of December and started sculpting him mid January- working on it for about 3 weeks. After that I spent a week and a half straight just texturing. Then spent another two weeks rendering, comping and putting the reel together.

As always I appreciate the critiques! VFS is one year, so yea it goes by fairly quick.
AUMAKU
Hahaha, no no just need to have some sort of previous art experience, 2D or 3D related.
Jinian
I haven’t really dived too far into the fancy render tree set ups, so I’m still messing around with that. For this character though, I was going for that hand-painted artistic look, so painting right on the mesh in zbrush was perfect.
CharlesVarenne
I didn’t use displacement for this guy. Others who have used displacement before in XSI told me it was faster to render the high-res mesh instead. So I’m assuming render time is just as slow as in Maya.
dmc3d
Thanks Daniel! Take care and I’ll be in touch~
LATROMMI-SUINEG
Yea, that’s the paint job, I didn’t have time to clean it up as much as I wanted.
kitec
awe, thanks Cory!
pum
Thanks Herbert! You were of great inspiration to me :)
GrogMcGee
Hey Blake, yea the hand painted textures is what did it. Maybe the compositing adds to the 2d effect, but in the reel you see more of the sculpted volume of the mesh as it’s rotating, so it’s luckily not completely lost :)
boygonemad
yea it’s definitely 3d. Just a mix of the comping and painted textures and minor photoshop tweaks. Would love to do a tutorial if I have time, or one for another creature I will be starting!
dutchtilt
hey Josh, yea I wish! I was done school at the end of Feb. Thanks, so great to hear you like him~

Hi Arif! The background is actually the beast blurred out…but yea there’s not much detail I agree. I’ll keep that in mind and try not losing as much detail next time.

Nicely done!

one thing, even though there no need for it, I think your character could use a little more spec, as hes a giant slimy glistening snake monster, and spec always helps a model pop off the screen, not too much though. Anyway fantastic modelling and texturing all around, good luck, if your looking for work in Vancouver drop me an email. We do kids cartoons, but hey its work .

Only have one thing to say really...
CLEARLY NOT ENOUGH DETAIL! haha
Well done Julie, incredibly solid piece of work... and most of all a faithful translation from concept.
Only one minor comment, the curvature of the horns doesnt look right in some of your 3D shots, neither does their tapering. They look a lot more fluid on your concept...
Everything else is truly top notch.
A well deserved award, keep'em coming!
Rui

Altough the realization is impecable I don't quite like that "amalgam of organic matter" look the character has. 4.9 stars from me ;)

When I first bumped into this topic and saw the artist's name, it was hard for me to believe that this amazing thingy came from a woman artist. So stunning and detailed ! And your portfolio is really what I'm looking for.
5 stars at all.
