My last work on Lightwave, to learn using Digital confusion and procedural texturing.

Hi Version Here (270ko) (http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/strikevirus002.jpg)

Is that a stab at Digital Fusion? Because.. hey, that's pretty funny :)

That's a nice pic. I like these kind of pictures, always have, and it looks good.
The only thing I'd say caught my eyes is the surface of the.. well.. I don't know what, but the surface part the.. thing.. is standing on.. errruhm.. :)
I think that part looks procedural, at any rate. The big surface area. There's just something about it that looks somehow procedural. Not really underdetailed, but rather looks complex by use of several layers of noise. Make sense? I don't have a specific solution-suggestion I'm afraid, I don't know how I'd like it to look

Anyway, as it is it's still cool, and I sure wouldn't hate seeing some sort of animation with it. Could be in the spirit of an infomercial, some quick camera-movements to focus on the virus, and then flashing the text up. Awyeh.

.. oh, and that text is so depressing.. Those six last lines really makes me want to go research an effective anti-viral solution ;)

Heh. Digital Confusion is LW's latest DoF plugin. If memory serves, it's a post productio form of DoF intended to speed up rendering so you don't need to do 9 anti-aliasing passes.

Strike, very nice! You've got yourself a very distinct style about ya, very inspirational.

Gonna post it at SFM too? Pretty please? (If you haven't already? In terms of Internet time, I'm a bit jet-lagged.)

looks good to me, the texture does appear to use the Crumple procedurla in LW. Othere than that, nice work.

better change your specs.

20 microns is WAY too big for a virus. try maybe .1 micrometer

also generally viruses have defined shapes - I can't really tell waht this one's supposed to be shaped like.

yeah, about the shape of it

viruses are either helical - sprial shaped, or icosahedron - 20 triangular faces. the shape refers to the capsid, where the Genetic material is enclosed, either RNA or DNA. also, for the size, viruses range from 3-45 microns (i think, dont hold me on that)

but as for the picture, it looks great

Well sorry about the logo, but i don't live in Finland, and don't know how i would have copy a thing i didn't know... Anyway, i'll change my dp (designpicture) to something else...

The way is i still don't understand what the problem is with the gallery rules and this image. Can you explain Sheep Factory please, coz if it's a problem i post images, then tell me, and it will be the last one. Thanks

I think he meant you had to put 'Still:' in front of it. He might have edited it for ya.

Sheep Factory: Just a friendly piece of advice, a link or something to the Gallery Rules with a hint as to where to look would have been a bit more helpful. I think I would have made the same mistake.

Love is in the air ;p

And he strikes again ! Well, this is a pretty nice work... quite freaky though !
I like this texture and the general composition of the image.

Like gaggle, I'm now waiting for some camera work.

Next time you design a logo, check the banks around the planet, right ?!?!

this looks really cool. i really like it. I'm a newb to Lightwave but have always wondered how images like this are made. how exactly is this done? are there any sort of tutorials for this sort of stuff?

Nothing wrong with the Images strike.

Its the title , before I corrected it it was "Strike Virus" , the correct one is Still: Strike virus.

here is the thread that explains it in detail:

Great render Btw.

Thanks Sheep.

Zipp, there are a few techniques I can see that'd be worth studying. Of course, Strike should correct me if I'm mistaken. ;)

Gradients- Used to make the interesting luminescent effect. It works along the lines of brightening the edges of faces not facing the camera.

Procedural Textures- Used to do the nice organic bumpy look of th textures. I believe he used veins.

Magic Bevel- A modelling tool used to make the cool wavey tentacles on the .. uh.. virus? :)

Digital Confusion- A plugin for Lightwave that does the Depth of Field out of focus effect.

So if you focus on each of those elements, you'll know what you need to assemble an image like this. That is assuming, of course, that I didn't miss anything. (That and my info was accurate to begin with, heh..)

oops

Ok i misunderstood. Sorry Sheep. ;) I'll know for the next time ;)

thanks telling me.

Well, NanoGator : you say everything ! :) Except i used Crumple everywhere for my procedurals :)

Magicbevel : The tool for this kinda modelisation. Just apply it on an object and use it on the good polys.

gradients in color map and in luminosity to get that, and to finish i used Corona to have this shiny look.

Digital confusion of course : Avoid to use DOF with medium AA. Here i just used a Low AA with Digital confusion !

Thanks NanoGator :)

I like the image a lot. It reminds me of the visuals seen at the beginning of Fight Club. My only complaint has nothing to do with this image, rather your website. It could be me, but I really find it an ungainly experience navigating around clever UIs and Flash animations. So I see your image and click on your website link but then I go to the site and get lost because I don't know what to click next. Maybe if you had some clearly defined button saying click me for cool pictures. Other than that really, really neat cg image.
