The FIRST organization (first-sme.org (http://www.first-sme.org)), every year, gives hundreds of schools the same theme, deadline, and software, and then it's up to probably tens of thousands of high school students to pump out a 30 second animation in six weeks. As of February 22nd, all of the animations for the 2003 competition have been submitted (for the US teams (http://www.us-first.org) anyway). I personally was a "graphics division manager" for those six weeks, and I think our team, #435 The Robodogs did a pretty swell job under the pressure.

I am under some pressure myself trying to get a dozen things done right now. So for now, you can view a smaller 320x version, and later I will upload the full 640x version. Please enjoy! We worked very hard on this.

We used 3D Studio MAX R3.0 for some of the modeling towards the begning, but soon switched over to 3ds max 5 as fast as we could. All rendering was done in the max 5 package using backburner for net render. Some days we were able to get two entire computer labs on the net render holding roughly 60 computers. With that kind of power, we took the time to add in some nice detail since rendering was expected to go very quickly. Not everything turned out the way I had planned. If I had done it solo, I think the mouse, the Great Hall, and group shot scenes would have looked very different.

Enjoy! [320 with no credits (http://www.first.osysi.net/sm_435_nocredits.avi)] :: [320 full version (http://www.first.osysi.net/sm_435_full.avi)]

There's some very fast animation there. I like the way you represented the people, 3d 2d if you see what I mean.

Nice work. I'm not surprised you moved into R5, I've had no end of problems with R3.

We're now making revisions to this animation. We weren't completely happy with the final render, so now that the stress of the competition is over a few of us a fixing things here and there. I think you'll all love the new improvements. The Hall scene looks much much better now. not too much I can do about the mouse yet, sorry. :annoyed:

This is looking good. The composited scenes have a neat style. You said that you were using Max5 and had plenty of rendering resources but I didn't recognize any global illumination?

I didn't know 3ds Max was being taught in high school now! Sheesh, I sure wish it was like that when I was in school!

Nice work though.
