Hey everyone,

I was hoping that the new 1.5.1 version of the Mental ray for Maya plugin would have support for Subdivision Surfaces but no luck... I'm I just missing something here?

Has anyone found a way to render them in MR for Maya?

Thanks,

I don't think you are missing anything. It's just a 0.0.1 release so its more a bug fix version than feature release version. The only way I know to render them via Mental Ray in Maya is to convert them to polygons or Nurbs.

Sorry about that. It's just that I'm not sure how I'm going to convert the Subdivs to Polys. I need to keep the Subdivs around because I use the level 0 mesh to animate the level 1 detail in the same model... Sort of like a custom FFD. Anyway, thanks for the reply

If you select 'keep original' on you can animate the subdivs and the polygon copy will automatically update.

use poly smooth instead of sub dees.... Thats why it is better to model all your detail into the polyproxy rather than tweak level 1 and 2 verices on the subdee object.
Mental ray renders the smooth poly proxies with no problem.

Ahh yes! Keep originals! I totally forgot about that. That's a great tip. I bet I could write a script that converted to polys, rendered the scene and then deleted them afterwards. Cool, thanks again.
