View Full Version : OT: Please critique my reel (95% C4D)
interactiveBoy 03-02-2007, 05:55 PM I'm looking for critiques - good and bad so I can improve on this...
Given that I haven't had the opportunity to do much "cool looking" work recently, these clips are what I have to work with. I'd like your opinion on the pacing and editing or anything else that you feel like commenting on.
Reel (~18 megs) QT h.264 (http://ingleinteractive.com/video/reel01b.mov)
The song is "Secret Life of the Dead" by Judson Cowan.
Thanks
Gary

Hi, you have some nice work on there :). I'd consider shortening some of the clips a little to give it a bit more impact and pace, you don't need to show the whole clips for many of these things, I'm also not sure about the BUMBUMBUM stuff on the titlecard, as bum has a negative meaning in both America and the UK rather than just a pheonetic one even if it does go with the song. Mainly I think it needs a little tightening up and more of a feeling of pazazz as right now it's just a but too dry to make it shine. Good luck!

Thanks for your constructive comments! Based on the feedback I've received, I think I'll be re-cutting it to some higher impact music this weekend. (You are the 4th person to mention the pacing)
Funny how I never thought about the negative impact of using "bum" hahahaha. Good call. Well it'll be gone anyway because new music will be non-vocal.
Thanks again

Thanks Gary, now I'll have that song stuck in my head all night! :)
Although I appreciate good advice about avoiding zombies, I have to agree with the others, its maybe just a bit too cheeky.
Overall, very nice though. Congrates,

hey there
some good stuff there. i like the song but i am a big zombie movie fan so my opinion is slightly tilted. one thing i would say is that you have tried to insert a sense of humour into your reel and i think that is a good thing. i see alot of reels and there is not alot of personalitiy in them - just the work. but personality goes a long way to quote mr jackson. so what i would suggest is not to lose that but polish it a bit. the place for you do do this is probably at the start - so lose the bums and make something especially for your reel that will play in from the start working with a bit of type which would be your name.
also i second the tempo crits - everything seems to play at the same speed, a new track may fix this sensation.
good luck

Try adding some sound effects to the clips in the reel when you redo the music.
Particularly when something flys by the camera, such as the football etc..
The work looks pretty solid.
I like the interface windows, the 3D style sort of like Windows Vista or Mac OSX Leopard.
I've thought about doing something like that but haven't planned it out yet.
I REALLY want to do something like the interface in Minority Report, but scaled down to be closer to something in use today. Some of the glitz of the MR interface, with a more probable and less evolved feel than in the film.
Anyway, great work. I'll check it out again when you update it.

Thanks for all the comments guys...
@robotbob: Yeah i remember your paper zombie animations - those kicked ass. I'm glad you saw my intention of trying to inject some of my personality into this reel, but in the end, an animation/mograph reel is more about showing high impact, good looking stuff. I'm afraid a new soundtrack is in order.
@seco7: I know! It's a catchy little tune isn't it?
@dtoxxx: I know where you're coming from with the SFX, but I'm not sure if I agree 100%. The original animations of course had SFX in them, but for a reel I'm really trying to make it about showing good, short clips synced well with a music track. I'll certainly give it a try though. I just don't want it to come out cheesy.
I have *TONS* of renders from those 3D interface windows. It was a demonstrational tour of a complete website that was put together for investors of the company I worked for.
Thanks again everyone - and I'll post up a new version in a few days. For now, my stomach virus is calling for my attention.

Some nice stuff in there.
I really liked the 2-d layered stuff, as well as the "sheryl crow" mk12-ish vineys growing.
Incedentally, we did some Wired for Sound promos several years back (but was tradional cell animation).
The music was a bold choice--not what would be expected in this kind of reel, but I would agree its not working. Higher energy is needed as you say. A soundtrack can really make or break a reel--a good music choice sometimes making the reel seem more exciting then the footage actually is, but then the inverse of that is true as well.

I thought the opening bum-bum-bum was funny (and deliberate)
Maybe I need to get a more mature sense of humour, but I don't think it is going to offend that many people...
Also, I don't think every reel should be the same, if you have a standard, high energy soundtrack that everyone else uses, then you could up with something instantly forgettable.

Wow! Nice work, Gary :)
I really hate to see any of this cut short for the sake of pacing. Guess it's for the best though... Looking forward to seeing what you do with the revised version!

Thanks guys -
I have been resting today because I've been a little ill, but I'm hoping to have a new cut done soon.
@JoelD: thanks for the comparison to that Sheryl Crow piece - do you mean the one that Psyop did? Man that thing was amazing...

Yeah thats the one. Psyop has done some great stuff over the years.
May be wrong, but I think MK12 started the silhouetted blooming vines thing a few years back--but to hard to keep track now. Get better soon.
Work is great, but just to throw a spanner in the works - I love the soundtrack, it is catchy, I like the opening (bum is a good word ha!) and the fact that you didn't set it to some dull 'edgy' corporate dance tune at breakneck hollywood action movie pace. I think the point of a reel is to see your work not your clever movie editing skills, and in a world where there are literally thousands of such reels of equally good work, it would stand out, which achieves the main goal of a reel no?
Anyhow, I am not someone who is ever going to employ someone else for their motion graphics work so what do I know, but well done for great work and not conforming, it shows you have a little something about you I think :)

Hey Dooood,
Nice reel! Better flow now (I saw the rough cut).
I actually do like the song. It's different, and an attention getter.
I am also in the camp that it's a little slow for a mograph reel but......
Is there any possible way to pick up the pace later in the reel? I hate to say this but could you either "mix" the song at some point to have a little more edge or write your own (which I know he can do) to transition to? Possibly adopting some of the characteristics of the original, to smooth the transition. Might be easier to either use the song in it's entirety or just start over. I do have to say, it's a bold and different choice.
Nice! :)
