does anybody have any advise on how to texture this guy?
it wouldn`t be that much of a problem if it weren`t for these
problem areas outlined here
help much appretiated :)

Hey Funkyfoe,
That's one of those questions that can take an entire CD to answer ;) But generally speaking, it looks like a job for UV mapping. You will want to create a general spherical or cylindrical projection to get you started. Then isolate the faces in those tricky areas, create a new projection on that selection (maybe planar or another cylindrical one - depending on what looks best), then move those UV's out to the side and manually straighten them out. Cut and sew UVs till you are happy with the UV map.
