read the manual - it's about setting an environment variable - it is documented in the mental-ray installation notes

no programming needed - it's a windows environment variable - you can set it with Start->Settings->System->Advanced->Environment Variables...

and then i type MAYA_MRFM_SHOW_CUSTOM_SHADERS
in the area marked path and 1 for it's value!?

Not in the path section, click the 'new' button to create a new variable.

oh yeah...done err...now I just tried a render view and the script editor says mental ray init failed info mayatomr aborted...
great...

did you restart your computer first?
Because you need to restart windows for it to load the new variable!

The render worked on a new scene so there must be something about the scene I was working on that mental ray did not like.
