This is the fresh Forum thread to go along with some of the other changes that will coincide our DATABOOK (http://softdistortion.com/shirowforum/viewtopic.php?t=275) release.

http://softdistortion.com/shirowproject/newpage.jpg

Version 4 of our mainpage is up.
You can check it out live at www.shirowproject.com (http://shirowproject.com). If you have been to the page lately, you might have to clear your browser cache to get it working with the new setup
I'll be a bit to get the missing links up, but it's on the way. :wip:

The previous thread is still up HERE (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=73&t=113779&page=1&pp=15), but the images linked off our team server have been removed to make space for new items. Most of the images are now represented in our DATABOOK 1.

BELOW are a few of the many clips this TEAM created

NEED TO MENTION...Some are fuzzy due to the lo rez we rendered back in the day...hard to believe but it was before HD video uploads were common place...:)

Alrighty then,

Looks great SD. I have a ton of ideas floating around. Im hoping we will be able to get all the puzzle pieces sorted out. I think I have put the final touches on some of the sets I've been working on. I will start working on the weightmaps for the main characters I think. Let me know if theres anything in particular you want me to do.

Thanks Sllink.

hehe... ideas?... we have no shortage...time and energy, that's another story lately. :)
I still haven't even sorted the hardware for the experiment we were discussing. :hmm:

For a while now I've been pondering the next steps for this part of the project and also your new animation, which is looking very nice. :) I'll try to get on MSN again soon and maybe we can throw a few thoughts out see what sticks.

One thng we do need to do is try to get a small core going again ...consolidate our remaining forces...outline what's needed and maybe set some semi hard dates to finish some things...give it some thought till we catch up on MSN. :wip:

WOW amazing video on youtube. The angle of the camera is interesting, the background is great. I can't believe I hadn't seen this thread yet.

How long did it take to finish the first clip with the introduction to the shirowproject?

softdistortion
03-03-2007, 04:50 PM
Thanks LS.

The camera angle is mostly do to cheating to hide the missing floor/foot contact....I worked at adding the contacts over a couple weeks but it looked bad as I am mostly good at mocap and not keyframing.

The whole thing took 18 months, although most of that was used for animation.

Hey Guys,

Just thought I would drop in and say hello as you usually do the same for us :) The project is looking really great. Have not looked at it all for a while but the stuff is looking fantastic.

I don't normally do a lot of tech stuff to be honest but I am always willing to give these things a go. So if you need something done I am willing to help. However, Fetch comes first so it might be a little while before I can help out here.

Keep up the great work guys.

I can see where there may be tactics employed for the first video to hide erroneous details or lack thereof. I would say that you need more contrast and opposing colors for the backgrounds if you plan on future videos. grey backgrounds do nothing for most viewers. However, you could just create an illusion. Small piece of background and use zoom on the main character so that the background will be detailed, animated, and interesting but taking less of your time to build up a huge set when the camera is zoomed out and from a lower angle.

Good luck all!! update frequently.

hehe, I have to take the heat for any color comments, I did the texturing on both clips. I guess it's a personal preference...I still feel amazed when I look at how it turned out and wouldn't change a thing in that area. :D

We probably can use a hand on LW work in the future. Sllink is also working on a new animation so there's tons of stuff to do. :wip:

Hey ...

Well hope to see some more kool stuff in this thread.

Did you think of giving away a book or 2 for a promotional stunt for the project...
Maybe have a quiz like something easy... ( The date Shirow project book 3 thread started )
or do the 100th person that posts gets a free one, or some junk like that.
Then post that you are giving out free books in the the general discussion section
to attract more people to the thread. It may boost some interest in the project.
To give it a kick start, just an idea.

As for your set design with the mono color background.
I think you made a great choice and would of done the same thing myself.
You don't want to make the background stand out as far as color .
It is not the focus, the character should be, as you have done well...

Be seeing you around.

Omar,

You are just full of 'em. Great ideas

SD I will try and catch up with you this week. I've been working on filling in on some of the story pieces and shot elements. By the way have you ever used the PSD exporter? Have you had any luck in using it vs. RLA or the other image exporters?

softdistortion
03-05-2007, 06:24 PM
yeah, I have used the PSD exporter, and some people love it, but I am not one of them. :)
If I am going to composite a bunch of render buffers/passes, I use multiple 'buffer exporter ' instances and point them to seperate folders for each buffer file sequence.
That way you don't end up with a folder full of all your various buffer files.

It will matter when you get into the thousands of image files in a folder, cause windoes folders will take forever to scan folders with that many files.

Another trick I used to speed things up for importing image sequences from their seperate folders is to manually type in the file name/location of the first file in each buffer sequence. That way you save time by not having to wait for your compositing apps import prompt window scan the image folder and bog again. Sio in After Effects for eg, you would type in the first filename and select 'load as image sequence'

I would suggest you make up a blank scene with the buffer exporter instances you want pointing to your image folders. Then you can use this as the first thing you load and save setting up the exporters for each scene in Layout.

Can I get the team to give me some feedback on the beta I have running for the free version of the book?

i just watched the video on Youtube again, and i really love it.

since becoming a Gits addict in the past couple of months and getting used to the Tachikoma's character and personality, it really makes the video you did shine even more

jayreef
03-19-2007, 07:16 PM
whats the new series?

:-)

softdistortion
03-22-2007, 01:54 PM
I meant the new Stand Alone Complex series with the Tachikoma's. They have similar voice/character styles of the few scraps of animation (PS1 GITS) that had Fuchikoma voices following Shirow's original concept. :)

you could always set up a paypal account, and add the commision to your final price. when its paid, you just transfer the money to your account. Its real easy to use, and works through your email address.

you would request a payment to me at *******@mac.com,

i would get the payment request, and pay you,

you get notified straight away I pay

you transfer the money when you want/have collected enough to ($50 I think)

job done.

I will pm you later with my details, anyway :)

Thanks KM.
The book and a new thread seemed like a fitting landmark for our next stages, which will include>
1. Sllink's clip that is pretty amazing and has a different look than our past works.

2. The models that we have done for the stylized photoreal scenes. I'll eventually get back to texturing and setup of scenes.

For these scenes I'm considering the suggestion to do a still image manga style presentation instead of full animations with sound... Also looking at using MentalRay render to add something different to the final look.

softdistortion
04-27-2007, 10:26 PM
hehe...yeah, it's hard to find work that you also want as a hobby. :)

Sllink sounds like he will beup first with new stuff.

I'm lagging majorly.

Taking a side trip with MinasTirith for a bit while learning some new software. Gave myself 1 month to get to grips with ZBrush and it's gone urprisingly well this time...after a few failed attempts in past (the interface was always intimidating, confusing and just odd).

Also taking more time with XSI and getting comfortable with a node based system and a completely different render setup...also going well...so looking hopeful for things to come.

Hopefully what I pick up will push the stuff I have yet to finish for shirowproject up another notchy or 2. :)

Still haven't got the books out or the store page done and up...that's got to be my worst thing to get to ever...sorry guys...I just have to sit down and do it.

as for XSi and zbrush

great apps, zbrush is mind blowing, its like learning a new way to eat!

as for XSi, I am ready to start, after seeing another colleges work with it...awesome and prize winning (literally), and very similar to lightwave from my view of the UI.

As for your Minas work SD, go for it, i watch with great interest, and like I always said.... you are a demon at textures:)

I guess basicaly shirowproject is a monument to insane amount of collab dedication, generous, talented teammates, working on multiple stories rendered in multiple styles all based around the Appleseed and GITS series of comics (Manga) by Masamune Shirow.

thelotrfreak1 .. I am not active on any projects at the moment at all, just a great admirer

work has me too busy to do anything, e.g been filming a green screen shot today, and will will be chroma keying all night

but no matter how much I enjoy Minas and all that, If I ever get chance, I intend to learn lightwave, and model shirow related stuff, as i love all that stuff.

which reminds me SD

one of my students wants to cell shade filmed characters (real people on DV), in Final Cut Pro (scanner Darkly style), any advice besides a lot of roto's at 25 fps?

softdistortion

Thanks for letting me know you got it...not to sound like a horn toot, but I still look at it regularly myself...it's great to have that as an accomplishment on our team project. :)

Re live to cell...wow...that's a whole different ballpark than our cellrenders.
I think he would be best to hunt down some tuts on the process...I know they are around as I have seen atleast one myself...here's a quicky I grabbed>
http://www.illustratortechniques.com/imitating-a-scanner-darkly.html

So yeah lots of hand roto work....the only other solution I can think of is to use color keying hacks.

EDIT- Here's a plugin that might be worth looking at to do roto tweening.

Hi SD

I am thinking of modelling a tachikoma,

I am looking for a decent export plugin to assist the problems from previous re: confusing cross platform

would you like a Tachikoma?

they are soo cute :)

softdistortion
05-21-2007, 12:18 PM
hehe...I'm not gonna say no. :)

I can't say when i will have time to get to placing it somewhere though.

Sllink is doing his animation more in that flavor of GITS, so maybe he could use it?
I could try to do the rigging if it is required. :wip:

Re export: I don't know of any plugins for C4D>LW. You could try sending a C4D to me and I might be able to open it with my Bodypaint app and perhps that will still transfer to LW.

Another option- Colkai saiid it a few times, and I am prone to agree that there must be a setting in C4D to adjust the polys for export. So you would model in an ergonomic, non Hi poly cage and then export with the lowest cage version setting.

Also if i recall C4D exported lots of tripolys so you could try to look for settings to keep quads?

We might have to test it a bit to get it right, maybe even trying other export file types?

Hiya Sllink and Donshole!
Sorry to hear your families stress over the summer Don.
Hope things pick up soon.

I'm still in one peice so far...still lending a texture hand to PJanssen over on MT.
Also still working on some things to hopefully re-kick Shirowproject's visibilty this Fall. :wip:

On other fronts, I really wanted to launch a collaboration focused, online network with a bunch of cool tools to encourage more collabs to start up....but the response to preliminary testing has been less than enthusiatic so far...collabing is just not the popular thing , so could figure it would get a few raised brows before getting over that hurdle.:)

Anyways...will likley still spin the idea off in some form Fall/Winter

Hope to see more of the team around once things start simmering again.

That kinda sucks but I would go through with it and build the network anyway. A lot people arent aware that some Studios take it as a positive if you worked on collaborative projects. It shows them that you work well with a team, understand development pipelines, etc, etc. In the end you would be doing much of the same with the place you hoping to hire into :).

Most of the shots will be used on the Dropship retexture and possibly also for an

This is a concept I did for a redo of my mainsite, using one of the panel shots . (http://softdistortion.com/PROMO/sd_logo_cropd.jpg)

so, time for an update before the team thread slips off the page. :)

Some may have seen there were some recent changes on MinasTirith, where I had been helping Pier by caring for the texture resource buildup etc.
Long story short... good to be out of the MT project for now - free to concentrate on our project and related works.

So with that in mind, some shirowproject updates.>

As mentioned a while back, Aurora is back and he and I will be working on the Tower, specifically the dropship docks. Integrating existing models and also it will be getting a higher rez once over to bring it up to date a bit.

Also, Dogma has done a highrez rebuild of the copbot. It's currently in the paint shop getting unwrap and textures.

We're planning on some serious eyecandy with this stuff, but don't expect many WIPs... to keep the response for the release fresh, we're gonna try a turn around of our normal progressive WIP tradition. This time there aren't going to be many if any WIPS :(

But yeah, you're right...how long will that last? :)

...It's hard to work alone and not get feedback, but everytime I've shown wips on our past work the final release gets almost no response....sometimes I hate the CG forums. :D

I'm still working on that colab newtork idea, so maybe something new in that area can help us lame artists. :p

* it is MODO and I love it.
It's astoundingly familiar for me coming from LW to MODO, so much so that I hardly have read any of the manual.

UV work is a dream...all the things dreamed about in LW (so glad I didn't buy Headus Unwrap program) It handles huge textures...I'm already at around 3 times what my old version of LW would crash under.

I'll be completely in love if it doesn't crash when I start getting to the mega rez HDR SIBL that is soon gonna be shot for this model set and for the dropship. :wip:

It may be worth rethinking what sort of clip to work on - a well choreographed action sequence might work (hint hint :) ). The truth though is that it's impossible to predict if forum users will like what we have to show. I guess the best way around that is not to expect too much in the first place and also decide what you really want out of working on something - increased skills, experience, exposure and so on. Having said that, shirowproject has probably been around long enough to expect more (not that we'll necessarily get it  )

Not to mention all your "LURKER" fans will enjoy the updates even if they don't post that often ;)

softdistortion
11-10-2007, 01:09 PM
The script for the docks actually has a huge action sequence...problem is getting it done....cause it's um...HUGE. :)

Agreed that you have to do it and not expect anything. Partly why I am pursuing the current rework of models -to get a better frame to have some challenge for texturing skills.

But the Fuchi clip for example took 18months to complete and while it was a pinnical for us as a joint project and hugely satisfying to get done...it kind of stunk when half of the few bits of response was critical- about things like the fuchi design and stuff like that.

Again that's why I keep harping on the collab network idea....I'd like to build a place that has a more positive and nurturing climate. Most of the CG forums thrive on negative criticism imo.

On that front, finally got a chance to watch Ratatoullie last week, and I thought wow...on so many levels it reminded me of the feelings i get on CG forums .

..the critic character, Ego, summing up his role as a "critic" was brilliantly truthful imo.. "We write negative critique becaue its fun to write and fun to read" "the junk that we label junk has more intrinsic value than our criticisms"

I can't remeber it all, but it was brilliant, as was that whole story and movie. Bird and crew are the bomb. :buttrock:

I've actually been told (not that long ago) ,via PM that shirowproject's work is "crap" unworthy of CGT etc.
Yet I've always felt like the Chef Gustaeu character..."anyone can cook"...., even little rats like us. :)

---on a less deep thought front :p
I've been debating possibly moving from mocaped CG characters to using real greenscreened actors.
We need to talk again about the mocap areas we had discussed earlier. Maybe we can make that work with some kind of cooperative arrangement.
I still think if we went full blown on the mocap end it would also spin off well as a branch of the collab site idea so there's still merit there. Lets MSN again sometime soonish.

Here's some info that exemplifies the point I made earlier about needing interpersonal work skills and not just technical CG skills.

This is regarding a very skilled person who lost his job during restructuring and was still unemployed months later...even with the help of an outsource coach!

The persons dilemma?
"while I am being perceived as technically proficient and quite intelligent, I do not convey the sort of "likeable" personality that people would want to work with."

The reality and a suggested solution>
"...people often get hired even without having 100% of the desired qualifications, if they are likeable enough that the employer is willing to take a bit of a chance on them. ... if they can see that you will be the kind of person that they, and others, can imagine working with on a daily basis? "

What areas do you think were stressed as needed?

Helpfulness (being generous, supportive, decent)
Make sure you mention an example or two of how you have stepped up at work before to assist others, above and beyond the call of duty
Talk about you're involvement in any outside activities that suggest you are contributing in some way (such as coaching a children's sports team, doing volunteer work)
The collab network I have in mind would provide a positive atmosphere for properly inclined people to build this requirement.

Is it needed? Well, just as one example -In the past I've PM'd and emailed some of the frontpaged artists in here and other forums asking for some assistance. In general they do not even condescend with a simple "no thanks" reply....they may have great skills, but if someday, in future I ended up in a hiring position where they were applying to for work, what do you think I would remember about them?

Collabing is a good way to build the skills needed to work on a team...being generous, supportive, decent without asking what's in it for me....

Training to be a lonewolf star? That is just not even slightly a real representation of the industry reality...well, unless maybe you are a Michael Bay and people just have to put up with you.

Come on guys...I need some REAL support on this.
Is no one else seeing enough of a need for this to get invloved? .:buttrock:

# 1 need right now is WEB programmers.
Promo items like for ex> www.collabunlimited/imagestrip needs to work better...I cobbled it together, but it needs a pro to help fix the obvious problems with linking out of the mainpage and getting dropped out of the chat.

Still working on The Copbot ...Aurora seems to have gone MIA on the docks, so will try one more PM and then have to go back to doing it alone if no reply ...I suppose. :hmm:

More positive news re help on the collab site progress.

Had contact from a team that is working on an artist CMS that looks like it will work with the collab network's structure.

Here's some specs from the designer on what it will do if it all works out>

the program contains everything I could think of to set up a project (from script, through storylines and storyboards, to character sheets and adding media (pictures, sounds etc...with an XSL file you could simply display the file to other users (not of the project, but as some sort of publication) online .

*Still need web programming helpers.
*If all goes well we will also need some people to help test the system out.
PM or email if you have some time and interest.:buttrock: .

_______________________

Here's some discussion (question/answer) that has been going on in aother forum...gives some more info on what's planned and already in the network setup.
If you have input please lets hear it!

Well, what if the site offered more than one ongoing project? Absolutely! ...that would be defacto. It's a network of teams/projects at one site. Also inter-disciplinary artists would be welcome. hence the unlimited tag.

So photogs, modelmakers, traditional DV cam, etc etc.
The netwok idea is beyond simply CG artists, but the skills will be interlinkable to help out between disciplines where there is a need.

What if you solicited Professional TD's (people wanting to make TD or Director) the opportunity to Produce or Direct a short project?

Oh yeah!
I also think this is key. Another reason I think it needs to have some income making ability -fees, donations.
Then we can even hire pros if, when we can't get volunteers.

Design of the website into a slick showcase of the progress of each project and it's people will help snag casual browsers.
Already implimented on the front page.:buttrock:

Of course the problem is that don't necessarily want the casual participant more likely you want dedicated collaborators.
Good point!
My solution was to have a variety of levels of challenges re time/skill, so people can do what they like and move up or down as they need to.
Also here again I think is a spot that low, but existing subscribe fees for new people will weed out the browsers?

How about having each project have a weekly chat session? I think it goes back to what I said earlier about making the interactions more personal and "real." Voice chat sessions would be the ultimate.
Already implimented !
Voice/vid chat is limited to 2 persons atm, but looking at expanding that.

Charted progress and goals would be nice. I understand where this can't be practical.
Yeah, I dopn't know if I can manage this one. My interim idea was to have a board of people to keep an eye on the projects and rate them each week. That would feed into a database that updates the front page with the sucess level of the top 5 projects.

Rigid deadlines may be good practice for the real world, but when your participants are doing this for fun in their spare time this type of structure won't work. When you hound people for a deadline it will just suck the fun out of it. It isn't like the mini challenges mentioned before. People volunteer for a mini challenge for a quick game of "beat the clock" but a longer commitment might not be so appealing.

True. I was thinking- start the mini challenges and see how that goes?

Really good to see that I'm not the only one thining this typpe of thing would be cool.:)

Good talking to you about this Dexter .
Thanks again for taking time to post your thoughts!:buttrock:

Hi Soft,

I see you are making some real progress with the collabunlimited 'project'. Although we have already talk about our thoughts on it over msn, me being the overly critical one :), I thought I would post some information in the public domain.

You know I am quite cynical about the average person investing time while he might recieve no immidiate benefits, or benefits in the near future. But I do have a nice story of what happened at work last week, this example shows that the world does not always have to work in the same cold way it usually does.

At work, we have a colleague who has recently bought a house near work. Usually he travels about 4 hours a day to get to work, but with his new house it will only take him about 10 minutes to get to work. Sounds great, right? Yes, it does sound great, the only problem is that the house he bought needs so much work that it would take him weeks to fix the house in his spare time. So after two weeks we started to notice that he was having problems, he was becoming increasingly tired, and a bit of a depression started to kick in. We all noticed it, and our team manager also became aware of the problem.

Now, what happened then was quite remarkable, at least from my perspective. My team manager told the team that he would allow a whole group of people ( say, 16? ) to take a day or two to help our colleague with his house. He would simply pay us, and we would help fix the house. Keep in mind that the colleague only just started working with us, and had no real relation with anyone yet. Within no time many colleagues applied to help the person who was in need with his problem, with no obvious benefit to them. Everybody chipped in with getting material for him to use in his house and some are helping him during the weekends and evenings to fix the house so he can have a place to live that is near work.

Although it might look to some like our manager just wasted tens of thousands of euro's (think 16 people * 2 days * 8 hours * 120 euro's at least ...30.720 euro's :) ) and colleagues would be worried about getting behind on their daily work and tight deadlines, everybody is much happier, and proud about the way we handled this. I think the person we helped has probably never been happier in his life, and although he has not been a teammember for very long yet, I am sure he will think twice before leaving in the next 10 years.

I think your idea of collaboration unlimited is not very different. People working together to their best of their abilities to provide help to eachother on a daily basis in a set of projects. The benefits? Our team manager told me just the other day that he could not have been happier with our team, he was impressed with how easily everybody stepped up to the plate and helped out, regardless of approaching deadlines. The team? Could not be happier with the rest of the team and the team manager who made it much easier to help. Did individual skills matter? Did it matter that some could only clean, while others we're very skilled craftmen? No, it didn't! Everybody did things to the best of their ability to get the job done, and this works very well if you assign someone to do a job he can handle.

I think the result will be the same in a collaboration if there is clear communication and when there are clear, achievable goals, and when people are genuinly committed to helping eachother reach these goals. I hope that this somewhat related story helps.

So there you have it, my story. I hope it inspires you a bit to keep going. I think there is definitely much, much, much untapped potential in online collaborations. You have the expertise to put together a place where good collaborative efforts will become healthy, productive projects. But it will take much time, and much effort.

That was an awesome example of what we all need to do more of. :buttrock:

When I went to find out about permission for shooting in this old factory I was not optimistic...it turned out the person in charge of security knew me from volunteer work we did in the past.

Positive actions are worth the effort.

I bet that guy at work will be looking for ways to do things for others just because he feels so much better after the help he received.

*I'm the guy in the stripe bike jacket. The person standing with the cap on is Adam, the guy who gave us access. The person at the laptop clicking away in most of the shots and the video clip is Rob my buddy and the brown jacket guy with the cap is my brother.

You can login and hang around while you do other work. If you have your speakers on a female voice will say "welcome" to notify you when someone has entered the chat.

After all the people in the room get their modellig app ready the person that was there first picks a random object to use as the challenge.

He also sets a time limit and then says go!
Preferrable he does it all in quick succession, something like "model a duck...5 minutes...GO!"

First person to finish types the following *whip* DONE!
The *whip* triggers a whip sound emoticon letting the others know they have been WHIPPED :)

You can use the uploader to upload your model screen grabs (no renders please and keep em sized, around 640x480)
Once the upload is complete a URL will be returned that you can copy paste to the chat.
If you refresh the mini gallery frame the image stip will update with the most recent uploaded images.

The idea is not to do great models but to work as fast as possible without any time for planning but instead using purely gut instinct on how you will model something in only a few minutes.

you don't have time to worry how good it will look, or how much better the other people's ducks might be.

Then we can compare our results and have a good laugh.

If it sounds silly, well, it is, but it's more fundoing it than explaining. :wip:

Anyone else that wants to drop in for a thrashing is invited to do so.

If you can't make it, or miss us, don't dispare. I will keep the page active for anyone to have challenges on at any time...

I also hope to hang around during some weekdays while doing non critical work ,so you can always drop in and see if I'm around to give me a beating too....my model skills stink btw. :p

Re the Fights, well, the page is up HERE (www.collabunlimited.com/imagestrip) and payed for the next year, so we can use it anytime. Anyone want to propose a date(s).

The alternative is to login and leave the window open on your computer. If you have speakers on your computer, you will get a "welcome" sound letting you know one of us has dropped in.

Colkai....that hawk sound is still in there... you need to type in *hawk* with the asteriks marks

Hi Guys...Hope you are all well.

Just a heads up for anyone that would like to know.
I'm downsizing and moving some server space, and that means the team forum is going offline permanently in the next while. ...if you wanted to save anything in particular get it while you can. HERE (http://softdistortion.com/shirowforum)

It's an end to a glorious past, but I've tried transferring it, and it's just too huge for me to spend the time to get it all moved to the new server space.

Most of the main team info Colkai and I compiled is in the DATABOOK, so atleast that's permanently saved and I still intend on getting a proper order page setup someday so others can get a copy.

There is a way to fake SSS with image maps if you are interested I can see about diggin it up for you...let me know.

Maybe we will both be done at the same time...The stuff I'm on is taking forever.
Still working out the collab site structure. Will be starting a new thread here shortly to help raise awarness on what it's about and what it has to offer. :wip:

Copbot is still undergoing textures. All I can do now is promise it will look VERY nice when it finally gets shown.

Hi jojo,
yep there is still activity. We just haven't been showing WIPS any more.
Although, I think that strategy will change and I intend to soon go back to the steady WIP posts format and also add some more insight to what's being worked on for people that want to see that stuff.

Right now, Sllink is working on a sidestory (that's looking SWEET) and I'm busy doing a few things that should help re-ignite shirowproject's main story second phase properly and also spin it into something to promote collabs in general...I HOPE :wise: .

Don't need models at the moment, but that could change so drop in again!

UPDATE-
http://collabunlimited.com/images/collabunlimited_promo02.jpg
It's a Blank page at www.collabunlimited.com till it's ready for release, but I'm almost done the collabunlimited site! ...There's been more than a few nights of bleary eyed scanning of reams of css, mysql, html, php.... :scream:
but it's slowly coming to an end and looking quite nice.

A few more items to finalize and then need to add some content. <Sllink if you are reading this I hope you have some pics, inf,o behind the scenes we can add to collabunlimited on your sidemission work!

I was hoping to make it a wide release site, and already have some projects onboard at launch, but it seems there is not much excitment about collabs...go figure. :)

Once the site is done in March- the ground floor will be there.
Initially, I'll use it to post wips, info etc on shirowproject and any other stuff I'm collabing/experimenting in. and hope others will slowly get a bit excited about it all and join in with their projects ...hopefully it will slowly spark a grass roots development.

I am hoping to do things a bit differently than what is already out on the web and in here.
To start Collabunlimited moves away from the forum as it's main focus.
It's overall format will be more visual like a magazine.
I'd like to see if it can be used as an elegant collab vinculum to present the work being done by it's member projects.

To have your work/project considered for inclusion, please eMail (shirowproject@hotmail.com) me or PM here.

Hi Team,
Just a quick update. I've been tweeking and tweeking and redoing this character forever. :scream: I think this is as good as hes gonna get. He the main security guard for a main character in this side story I've been working on.

I hope everyone has been doing ok! All is moving along here. Initially I had all the individual panels for the storyboard then after reading everything it became pretty obvious that this character and the Big Boss guy had be be visible for some of the discussions during some of the shots so hence this new character. Well I guess I should get back at it I will try to have something up soon.

I started working on the tower interior again and while our old work is great, it just lacks geometry detail in some areas. The center ring platform was one of those areas.

I found a cool ref and was modelling away...slow as a snail...(cause I don't MODEL!!) trying to reproduce the ref...Dogma came online and we chatted...long story short, he was good enough to squeeze in a blistering quick (literally BLISTERING FAST...while I was modelling a 10 poly box light...man I suck at modelling... he had the stairs done!) redo of the towers center platform. I'm 50% done adjusting the placement and UVing it.

Thanks again Victor . :applause:

Donshole- haven't forgotten  ...
just too scattered scrambling with a few ends-
for ex. The mocap partnerships I'm trying to forge is taking a fair bit of effort just getting the various versions and apps sorted.
You know the version issues we had with that last job? Same thing this time going between MB versions and LW FBX plugin vers..... I FINALLY figured out a fix. But we're still working to get comfortable with the partnership and establish a pipeline for working with our projects needs and simultaneously getting the first batch of usable mocap files up in the collabunlimited store by May1st.

Also still shooting more high res (20k) HDR panos...also now shooting some matching HDR back plates. These will also go in the collabunlimited store at smaller sizes ...eventually
...so hopefully some people will buy these reasonable priced panos/plates and help fund the site's future goals.

Some site reference shots>

The bottom line is that it's slow and steady, but all working out and heading in the right direction. :applause:

Dogma- Thanks for the positive feedback.

Even with a few hurdles on the way, it's been geat working with the company that is generating our mocap ...for Shirowproject as a showpiece...later as I tie in with more mocap facilities, all of this is hoped to tie into the next phases of collabunlimited.com to help the teams that need or want this type of access.

PS: Thnx for your patience with not seeing your recent model contributions finished yet....it's all taking time, but it will get done and look great. :wip:

Massive effort sllink, I like your sets and rendering . My only comment is that the poses are too stiff. A good rule of thumb is to put yourself in said pose and feel if it's comfortable. Also rotate the shoulders and curve the spine more. Lastly (I hope it's not too critical) try a variety of relaxed poses with the hands - at the wrist and fingers.

Cheers

Les

Thanks for the comments Les. That is probably the main thing I missed working on this is the feedback from the team. I missed those details and the help from you guys and you are right on. I spent so much time looking at it my eyeballs hurt. :banghead:.

This actually started out as just storyboards for animation but after a while I figured I might be able to turn this into a Comic and the next thing I know.....Im re-rendering all the low rez shots and writing the dialog. :)

How'd you do the pyro effects you've got going on?

Hey sllink,

How'd you do the pyro effects you've got going on?

Hi DonShole,

Well, I used a little bit of everything. Whithin lightwave I used the particle system to generate the base flames and explosion. I also used a Worley plugin called Heat Wave for the slight heat distortion apperaence. Then for some extra sizzle I used a program called Illusion http://www.wondertouch.com/. Then I just messed around in PS till I got an image that I thought worked.

softdistortion

yep, still open, but mainly it's me and Sllink left crawling along. :D

We could use some good modelers to revamp some of our models that I am wrestling with on the texture end.:wip:

Sllink redid the main body, but it stll could use more detailing.

Images below...Anyone feels up to it-
PM or email me and I can link mesh refs of what we have at the moment.
