View Full Version : Modeling Logos and such for flythroughs
Skettalee 03-01-2007, 08:01 PM Ok, i recently got Cinema 4D R10 as well as Lynda.com's training set for R10. I watched the whole thing and I am very confused when it comes to 3d period, i used to try Maya for a year and then gave up and went to this cause i heard it was easier. Well man i dont know what it is but 3d an me arent mixing, I can do any other media design stuff with video, motion graphics, graphics and programming for web but 3d just is too much for me i think. What is it? Can someone help me get a grip really? Why am I not getting it? Is it because there is just so much to do with a single thing?
Well anyway.. My question :
I am trying to take some photoshop created logos and such that I made and put them in cinema 4d just to look at a side view and actually recreate it using I guess cubes or whatever and shaping it to the image, then removing the image and creating materials and then a camera movement with everything.
Im not all stupid since I watched the full training set from Lynda.com for R10. But still, after watching that whole thing and doing alot of what he did with him as well, it still doesn't come to me. Plus there is alot that he did that was way too fast and he never even showed how to put an image in, even though I recall a year ago finding out how when I first started to try Cinema 4d when it was liek 8 or 9. Anyone can slap me straight? I feel that 3d modeling and animation could be a huge asset to my multimedia company but I sware its not coming nowhere near easy. Even after praying to the lord on this.
Anyone ? I would be willing to trade any services just to get a grip on all this...
My site is www.337studios.com (I do music production, graphic design, web design, video editing, photography, videography, motion graphics and all that. Pretty much everything but the 3d side of things. Thats why i need to learn this)

If the logo are just 2d shapes that you want to turn into 3D then using paths and exporting the files as Illustrator 8 files. then just open them in C4D and place the spline under an extrude nurbs.
If you are needing to get to grips with C4D then head over here sign up and download the bucket load of tutorials. Free tutorials don't get much better.

I remember when he did that in the tutorial. But not all of what I will be putting in is just 2d shapes really. I know that the other images are hard. You know what, might as well just start with the 2d shapes.
Isn't there something like maybe adding a plance and standing it up and projecting that image on there, that might work? I just thought of that too.. haha. I got something I can try what you told me on, ill go do that and let you see a before and after. Thanks man!
Any other ways you could do this?
PS: Thanks for the link. Free is alot better.... Plus my budget for my own studio is low now anyway. I cant afford to buy anything else. Got that Adobe Video Suite... ohhh.. cant wait till Photoshop CS3!

Sorry I missed out a bit If you want to add reference images to the view port just goto the view port edit menu/Configure then select the Back tag. In there you can import an image an dmove it about to suit. There a new tutorial on this subject at c4dcafe.

Yes, I actually noticed it. I did the paths but decided to just use the back image, this is how far I am so far :
Original Logo :

Anyone have anything to add about what I should do about getting this to look good.
Things im thinking of doing is having it all coming together and hammering on the metal or something, i dont know i got alot of ideas.
But, thank you so much so far I feel that I am coming along and finally got something accomplished.

Got another question about this, I got the hammer and I want the actual metal part (hammering part) to be thicker like there is actually wood going through it but I just turned a spline into an extrude nurbs and dont know how to select just that part and manipulate it much less put different materials on both parts. How do I make that?

You need to make the Extrude nurbs editable. Just select the Extrude nurbs and press the c key. Now you can do a knife cut across the top of the handle, select the polygons on the front of the hammer head and extrude.
Materials. select the polygons then Selection/Set selection. You can now drag the selection tag into the Selection box of the material tag.

just a few thoughts...
Yes, 3D is pretty hard. You need to understand alot of different tools, techniques, concepts, etc., just to make a single image. You also need to understand how Photoshop, Illustrator, and other peices of software play an important role in working in 3D. It takes time, practice, patience, and good learning materials to successfully use 3D.
I think you might be rushing, and thus hitting walls...take you time, go slow, you can get it.
As far as the Linda training goes....it is not the best learning tool for C4D, so don't think that just because you watched it you should know what you are doing. It has some good info to help understand the big picture of C4D, but you need ALOT more than that to really get a base understanding started.
Check out cineversity, c4dportal and c4dcafe for alot of free tutorials.

As far as the Linda training goes....it is not the best learning tool for C4D... [edit by dbond] Check out cineversity, c4dportal and c4dcafe for alot of free tutorials. Could not agree more with this. I'm no expert in C4D, but after watching vol. 1-3 of 3DFluff (highly recommended), watching the Lynda.com videos was verging on painful.
I personally started out with Anne Powers book, but it's pretty out of date now (R8.5). She's currently updating it. You could check out Arndt von Koenigsmarck's book on Amazon. I haven't gone through it thoroughly yet, but it looks to be an outstanding resource.

Thank you guys for the tips! I will go get that book right there for sure! I feel that I am slowly getting it. Im taking my time more. Look what I made today with the logo:

Tell me what you think of that? I know I want to put more detail into it later!

If it hasn't already been suggested, I would advise making the hammer as two separate parts; the handle and the head. That would make modelling them and texturing them much simpler.

Yes, thats my next step. Its just hard for me to get it right. Its just a spline with an extended nurb so there is no real back its like a front with fake sides and back. right?

With some research, I found the hammer you used
in your logo. That can be modeled easily. Just take
each part at a time.

After modeling, lighting and texturing makes all the difference.
