Well I just ended with this pic, it took me about 20 hrs to model and cca 10 hrs to render. All done in 3ds max 5 using its Advanced Lighting GI and then composited in Photoshop 7. So I'd like to hear some opinions, crits or suggestions. :)

Perfect.... I mean, its really nice.

The only thing is maybe that the lighting of your car is too bright compared to the environnement.

Nice job dude.

very well done. the only thing i can see is the quality of the photo and the render of the truck don't match up... you can see the grain in the photo, but the truck is crystal clear.

other than that, very well done. what did you use to composite?

Beautiful!

Looks really real... and very well lit. Great job.

But... well maybe I am slow, but 20h for modelling that seems quite fast... do you have some make-lego-script in max? :)

I´ve tried modeling lego-shapes myself once and found it to be surprisingly timeconsuming. Looks like you have developed a skill for it.

I love the shadows thrown by the truck. Need tp blur it a bit so it fits in with the film grain of the photo like mattconway suggested.

Very nicely done though.

loocas
03-01-2003, 05:45 PM
mattconway: well, the truck has grain, you maybe didn't notice that but look at it from shorter distance... :) anyways, thanks for critics, like to hear what to improve next time... and the composition, I composited cg truck in photoshop 7.

Chagidiel: well, I just modeled one brick, next bricks were simple edited compies of the previous brick, so it was pretty quick at the begining, but the more polygons were modeled, the slower computer worked :p

I figured someone would have caught this before me. In the window, you can see a reflection of you taking a picture of the desk. There is no Lego car there, of course. BUT, I think you should add one though, so EVEN your photography mistakes are photo-realistic.

Excellent work by the way. The reflection thing just caught me as funny.:buttrock:

You can see the person taking the picture in the reflection of that lamp (lamp right?). Was that what you were going for?

BiTMAP
03-01-2003, 11:52 PM
I don't know if you'd see the lego car in the reflection.

NewGen
03-02-2003, 04:40 AM
Yeah, it's a chrome lamp in front of the window. With the position of the lamp, you would not see the truck in the reflection. At first I thought it was a reflection in the window, but it is actually a desk lamp....I think that is where the confusion comes in.

Well done.

Thank you guys, glad you liked the truck :bounce:
Well, for the reflection thing... nope, Truck couldn't be seen from this angle of wiev in the reflection of the lamp. Well, that was my fault, that I hadn't noticed the lamp before I took the photo :thumbsdow actually, next composition should be MUCH MORE realistic, I hope  :)

Anyways, thank you again!

"actually, next composition should be MUCH MORE realistic, I hope"

how more realistic can you get :D...

well done.... great job here!

loocas
03-25-2003, 06:39 PM
To phoenix2k: Well, this is not perfect, I can see it after several crits from several phorums around the world. And that gave me very much, so next time I'll pay attention to the VERY LAST detail on the pic!

Thanks for your comment, glad you liked that man ;)

loocas
03-25-2003, 06:46 PM
Well, nobody asked for it, but I think I should show the model in 3ds max, so here is the "wire"

http://duber.meeen.net/dump/lego_max.jpg

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and here is the very first full-render (just a test) even before I added the textures, colors... Well, before whole composition :)

Hope you enjoy it and I will get more feedback from you guys?! :bounce: :)

wow, excellent model.. I had that same van when I was a kid, and if I remember it correctly, yours is very accurate. Great attention to detail, the composition is fantastic! Hope to see some more of this soon!

Side note loocus, I notice you're from Prague.. I was born there

whoooops sorry.. i miss this one :P

hehe I know your pict already, you submited it to the raph.com jury, right? really nice lighting and texturing, good job loocas:)

its just cosmetics, bu imho the shadows ON the car (by the little bumps) are too dark

loocas
03-26-2003, 09:26 PM
To Pascal Blanché: I really appreciate your post here, know that I little foced you man :p but I just couldn't helped myself and I had to know your opinion, 'coz you're one of my the most favorite artist around the world. Well, about Raph.com, I tried to submit this pic and I know that Raph.com is about VERY HIGH-STANDARD art, but only 2/12 juries accepted it, don't know who was it, but I'd like to thank them! Well, as I said before, hope next time I'll be doing some composition it will be more realistic and precise to get into Raph.com and maybe get some award ;)
But, please don't think that I'm bigheaded or so! NOT AT ALL! I just wanna be as good in cg for example as you are and other absolutely great artists!

Ok, so again, thank you very much! This is really encouraging! :bounce:

loocas
03-26-2003, 09:29 PM
To Zaphod1: Yeah, many people were criticising the shadows and I know that they're not accurate, well, next time... next time... ;)

HapZungLam

you may need to add some noise effect to make it likes it was taking by a DG cam.

awesome work on the model, the composition looks nice too :)

loocas
03-28-2003, 01:06 AM
To HapZungLam: Oh yeah, I know... as I wrote before, next time I'll do those details more believeable and precise. Anyways thanks for the suggestions! ;)

To fakie: Glad you liked it :bounce: ;) and also for your comment :)

AWSOME job.

Front page anyone?

03-28-2003, 02:51 AM
Looks pretty good, but I dont know if the car is in the reflected surface on the top right hand side of the picture :curious:

Good work tho, keep it up!
Cheers!

As far as i can see. The angle isnt right for a reflection.

Not sure if I understood the first post correclty, but 10 hrs to render? That sounds pretty steep just for that truck. Cool work none the less though.

Hey cool! I bought this model when I was young (eeuh... I'm 23 now.. ;) ). Take a look at this:

well i'm one of the two guys ;) i really like the ambience comming from the window :) And here is a tip: raph.com is about high quality, right, but also about imagination. A lego car on a table, even if it's a great pict will not get all the votes. If you had a more intriguing main subject instead of the (cool) lego car (wich I would a love to have when i was kid ;) ) you'll would have been accepted by the jury without prob..

and again, good work!

loocas
03-28-2003, 04:52 PM
To Pascal Blanché: Jesus, you really accepted that?! Cool, nobody would believe that from my neigborhood :D Well, and that recommendation you wrote is right! I new that when I was posting the pic. Actually, I wouldn't post that without many recommendations of cg neigborhood in our country. So I tried that without any meaning to be accepted (I said that I'm not bigheaded ;) ), but those two votes really surprised me in a good way! :bounce: But there is very big problem with my imagination, I don't have the right imagination as you or for example Neil Blevins etc. have! And I really love to do real things, or real looking renders, compositions etc. And I don't know if Raph.com will ever accept my future work? 'coz it will probably be another attepts to reach total photorealism.
Anyways, VERY BIG thank you man! This is really blowing up! :)

loocas
03-28-2003, 04:53 PM
To Abominable: Yeah, 10hrs is TOO much I know! But I didn't use any special rendering soft, such (my favourite) finalRENDER or Brazil r/s or so... So GI in native max renderer with the combination of (standard) Raytrace and Soft Shadows... Well, that almost burned my CPU! :D

To nose: Hey, I got this model to my birthday (eleven then), but till now it stays next to my monitor :D Thanks for the comment. Can't believe that too many cg people have this model as I do!

To Ultragames: Yes, the angle doesan't allow my desk lamp to reflect the truck. Anyways, thanks :)

To Beholder: YES SIR!

To Lukashi: Well, with such rendertime?! Maybe sometime, when won't have nothing to do than to fiddle with finalRender ('coz max GI and raytracing doesnat work together as I wish to...)

To ThirdEye_01: Thanks

Thank ya all guys!!! Glad you liked that!

very cool. very realistic. superb work, loocas.

I really like the pieces you used for it...but I think the entire is a tad to bright. the backround is also kewl too, with the wooden owl and stuff....

BTW, by any chance, did you use a real Lego van for this rendering?

~S

and if anyone must know, yes... I'ma Lego obsessive ;)

God, people, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY... GLAD you liked this stuff! 'coz I don't wanna do anything but "real" compositions etc! well, many people don't consider me as an artist, well, they may be right, but what would be Star Wars without photoreal renderings and compositions? Huh, that was just a bit of thinkin' stuff... :scream:

Ok, now seriously, thank ya all very very very much! for your encouraging speaks! Hope you'll like my upcoming BMW too! ;)

 THX!

loocas
04-29-2003, 07:37 PM
To Solarix: Well I have the same model of this lego, but that one on the pic is purely CG... I built the model from the lego plan reference I, ofcourse, have. Every single brick, every brick has chamfered edge, everything cg but, ofcourse, the pic (with that owl, damned reflection of mine :scream: and the window... ;)
