So about what I'm doing...I just got a new Wacom for christmass, and I haven't painted anything in months, and I've never tried painting a face before...so this is my attempt at that. This girl is a friend of mine.
The sketch above was 1 hr. Now I've started doing color, spent another couple hours on this...that's it for tonight.

Here's an update started on the hair. Before I get too far let me respectfully ask...no paintovers please. However, I do not mind constructive criticism...I know there are some real experts here that I could learn a lot from.

Hi, by no means an expert but may have a few very basic tips to share:).
The nose looks a little twisted, and I think it's the right (her left) nostril that needs some work. try flipping the canvas every other 30 mins or so to prevent distortions - our eyes get very used to our mistakes:).
You might find this link (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=166&t=259468) helpful for the hair. It helps if you set the brush to 'other dynamics - opacity jitter - pen pressure' and paint larger sections of hair first with darker colours. It gets less 'sketchy' that way. Keep it up!

Wow, good point about flipping the canvas...the nose is on my todo list

Update. I have attempted to fix all the strange asymmetry problems...that involved completely redoing the mouth, nose, moving the chin, moving the edge of the face, moving the neck tendons..and did a bunch of other things to. How's it looking?

Hi Stuh, great work!! Good colouring on the neck, delicate.
two more tips:
- make the eyeballs look more like spheres by shading them;
- the hair is still looking quite sketchy, maybe try again and begin by putting big fluent strokes in a darker colour? see the tut. I think you can do it and it's a shame for such a nice portrait if people are distracted by the hair.
Keep going!:thumbsup:

Alright made the shading a bit more spherical. Maybe if I don't blur the hair it will look better what do you think about this one
That is a great tut...but I've spent so many hours on this hair, and honestly I really like it. I'll try that next time.

This is really coming along, although I prefer the colors of the more sepia toned version a bit better. My only addition would be to make a copy of the file, throw caution to the wind and put more bold shadow in there - do a couple of quick versions; check out Mr Stalhlberg's paintover thread for some ideas. Maybe blur the edges of the hair a bit more where it fades into the background.
Oh - and give her some eyelashes!

p.s. the lower edge of her nostril on the right of the image still looks a bit pulled down - lift it up a tad towards the center and round the edge a bit
