When i try rendering a displacement, in mental ray using a subdiv aproximation with a Spatial setting my renderer crashes every time, i can use the parametric setting and it will work fine everytime but i dont have the same adjustability with the parametric setting. So is this a bug, or am i doing something wrong?

i forgot to mention the same displacement same exact settings, work fine in 8.0 with Spatial settings.

did you try lowering your spatial settings? You should post your settings. how much ram do you have?

the macine im using is a dell XPS, 4 gigs of ram and a pentium dual core (not sure of the speed) its a school PC so i dont have the exact specs but its a hefty machine. My spatial setting are min subs 2, max subs 5. but i can lower them and i get the same result.

windows xp by default will only use 2 gigs of ram per application. To change that you need to activate the 3GB switch. which app did you make your displacement in? did you convert it to a .map?

Does it crash the program completely or just not render? did u try turing on info messages in mental ray translation to trouble-shoot. maybe you can find out exactly whats causing the hangup (post the error message) otherwise who knows what the problem is. if it is a memory issue try using .hdr format for your displacements (i am assuming you are using 32 or 16 bit tiffs)

displacements should be .map

it only crashes the render saying "mental ray has encoutered a fatal error please save and close maya." after wich i have to restart maya or i cant render anything. im using a 16 bit tiff created in mudbox, how would i convert it to a .map file

post on the mudbox forums.. there is a script that converts tif to map.. I doubt that is the fix for your problem but map files render faster. I got the same error that you get back when I had my subsegments for my maya hair set way way way to high.. so it sounds like your problem is a setting set way high on something. Is your scene very complicated fully textured etc.. you should try on a simple scene..

yes ive tried a simple displacement on a single object in the scene i still get a render crash. i will check out the mudbox forums, and the information of the .map format is very helpfull, i appreciate that.

speaking of hair i also get render crashes on random shave and a hair cut renders. it renders then it doesnt then it does. This is the same result moving from a Boxx, to an XPS, and even my home made system at home.

as far as the hair goes i beleive i may have some setting too high somewere, but the displacement map im pretty confadent its an 8.5 bug as it Always worked fine in 8.0 and below. This problem made me miss the Expose deadling so im a little peeved, but it is kinda my fault for switching from 8.0 to 8.5 at the last minute.

you should also check the render diagnostics to see if you have any errors in your scene.

you also might want to think about going back to maya 8.
