This was my last render :)

Didn't have time to tweak it to perfection

Too busy moving house and dealing with a bad computer virus :annoyed:

So yeah, the pose is really crappola, and the comp could have been vastly improved...

it turned out really good leigh, a better pose and a little rimlighting could have added alot. but I know you said you didn't have time  but still good!! :)

Fellah, you HAVE to tell us how you got that cool translucent/SSS look on that lil guys ears! :D
They look fantastic! :applause:

You whole character looks fantastic

And yeah, I am sad that I did not manage to get a better pose and lighting (which I would have faked ;)) for my character, but things just got way too chaotic here... I'm still trying to locate all the infected files from that damn virus... I have reinstall SO many programs because of the virus screwing all the .exe files up :annoyed:

But it's not a major issue that I did not get my entry perfect, because us mods can't even win prizes anyway :)

Best of luck to everyone!

This would have been my entry. I think the server freaked out before I could get through. No biggy, I don't think I would have placed that well anyway.

This is a late render of my entry, after I screwed up the previous render with a dodgey DOF setting.

I certainly wish I'd had more free time to work on it, didn't finish it and didn't really have much time to try out new things. Still, it was a good excuse to practice, maybe someday I'll be worthy of a vote:shrug:

Are you going to do an explanation of fellah's technique for that amazing render in your book, Leigh? I would love to know how that SSS effect was achieved (from either of you). Either way, can't wait till the book's available, I find texturing a great mystery.

i sort of started late... so he is in need of some more props/armor. i think i also screwed up on the entry part... all i did was post a thread in the challange forum, is that enough to enter?

anyway i did have a good time building this character and will spend some time finishing him up. nice job everyone i really like to see the fruit of these challanges, always blows me away! :bounce:

ok now on to a few questions....

Leigh your character has amazingly detailed armor! my question is in reguard to animation. would you create seperate bones to hold it in place and keep it "solid". i was having a few problems with unpredictable movement so i dumped the armor all together..

thanks, glad you like the lil guy :) and I really hope we will see the development of your character on your site in the future!
Fellah, you HAVE to tell us how you got that cool translucent/SSS look on that lil guys ears!
I basically,
painted weights in modeler of the areas I wanted to have SSS at(lower values at the areas with less SSS and vice versa)
then I added that weightMap to a gradient in the translucency channel of the surfaceEditor
I also enhanced the effect by adding red colors in the UV's of the ears, more red to the areas with more SSS.
and the backlighting is important to. I used a bright red light and one with a little blue tint on this guy to enhance the SSS look of the ears.

it's no easy teqnicue, not a one button/shader that you can apply to everything without tweaks. but it works decent, and adds nothing to the render times.

if there's anything that's hard to understand/bad explained, don't hesitate to ask.

take care

What a cool technique, Fellah! Brilliant idea! I never cease to be amazed at the usefullness of gradients - they can be used in the most unusual and creative ways to produce SUCH cool effects! :D

Tack så mycket, Fellah
