I have a project where, I'm rendering a toon shaded shaded scene into diffuse pass and shadow pass per the clients request. I'm using Maya 7.0, the client set up the shots with all the cameras, and animimation. They also set up the render layers. I have double check their setup, made sure all the lights are the being used in the scene. Each time I go to render I get one of two things either shadow paases with a lot of noise as oppose to a smooth alpha, or when I go batch render becuase I have tested each scene's layer at variuos points , it goes to batch and renders nothing. I some idea's that one it could be the toon shader, but i dont think it that cause it renders beuaty passes fine. Two, it could be the scene reference location from the orginal file that is not allowing for a proper batch, or three the video card in serval various machine I have test this on all suck, but that goes back to when I do get proper result why would a batch not render anything in a scen when a sinlge frame renders prefect? Any help will be perfect at this point.

Thank you everybody for your support . I really thought a community of this size might have a thought or two on the question. :banghead: I guess I will just keep trying at it, with or with out the community's help.

I see it, but I don't know. My knowledge in this area is very limited. Some times you have to wait awhile to get somebody who actually has an answer. I would break it down piece by piece until you have a better idea of which section is having the problem. Then get that shot to work. I'm a little confused by your explanation also. Sorry can't be more help.

For comparison, please start with a rendering of your objects and shadows done all in one layer. If that's not correct, of course your shadow pass wouldn't look good either.

Maya's "shadow pass" check-box isn't necessarily the best way to render a shadow pass in Maya. I prefer the approach shown here:

I apperciate the fact I got a response from some one, esp from you Jeremy. I go to the Academy and should have taken your class instead of Texture and Lighting. Thank You.
I figured out was what was wrong so, It has to do with toon shaders. The toon shader does really create a shadow pass becuase due to the facing ratio a shader is either on or off. So to get a shadow pass, you create a seprate layer material overide with A BG shader. I hope this help someone in the future.
