View Full Version : Mental Ray -Render Pass/Elements
Adriano-Zanetti 02-27-2007, 10:55 AM Hey guys, i'm looking for good detailed Mental Ray "Render Pass" (render elements) tutorials, I need to learn more over the matter, even if it means writing my own shaders for the purpose of getting clean seperate passes. I'm rendering hair and sss simulataneously right now and for some reason all my passes (spec, diff, hair and fur, sss, velocity and so on... ) are messed up.
thanks for getting back to me,
pe@ce

me too ! :)
i need to render a hair pass WITH the shadow on the object, or a different pass with the hair shadow casting on the object. do you have a nice idea for that ? in mental ray or in scanline.

What I used was a render without the hair, then matte everything, and do a hair pass and a shadow passm from render elements. In the hair render effect, used 'none'.

yes, that is what i use too. But i cant have good shadows .
look at the shadow pass on the pict.
there are a lot of "self" shadows on the model : eyes, ear, nose.
i have uncheked the self cast shadow on the head on this pict but the light affect it .
its ok for a basic comp in photoshop, i can correct it. but i need hair to animate the model..
must i delete manualy all the bad shadow ??
please dont say : Yes !
:scream: :)

Umm, so you don't want your hair to self-shadow, or you don't want it to shadow the matte? If it's the second one, just uncheck the matte's recieve shadows. If it's the first - exclude the hair proxy from the shadow generating light maybe.

MrElmo thank you for the rpmanager link. ill take a look of it and download the demo.
Glacierise, what i want is, to have only a pass of the hair shadows that are on the head.
so i want : hair self shadow, and its work good
hair shadow the matte, and its not good. there are a lot of shadows that come from the head itself and not from the hair !
sorry for my bad english ;)

Then turn off 'cast shadows' in the object properties dialog ;)
