jose--
i want to see your animation but it took me 5 min to download and then i could only get the music---- how did you compress the file? i can open divx codecs---- but i could not open yours---- i know it is beautiful but i cannot see it-- can you compress it to a smaller file size with a different codec?

That was stunning.
That is probably the best student 3D anim i've seen.
May I ask how you achieved that paint effect?
Awesome Stuff!

i am glad you recompressed it-- i can see it now and it is so beautiful! the effect you used has such a strong sense of texture (like paint of course!) and creates so much of the mood. the style is very unique and creates a charming tone for the story. i really like the way you made the drawing appear while he is creating it.
are the leaves in the beginning images mapped on curves or particles? i am hoping to do something similar for my current project--
i am so glad you have the rights to that music--- it fits so well!
again-- so beautiful, the only suggestion i would make would be to exaggerate more of the facial expressions of the artist-- to see more of his emotion.
wonderful piece. congratulations!

That was inspirational man, simply beautiful  I loved everything about it the emotion, the passion he conveyed to continue the painterly feel you captured so well. The lighting was awesome! I can go on and on, simply one of the most elegant animations I've seen this year. Congrats man congrats!

Nice post effect.
But where is the story?

I dunno, I haven't seen the animation yet, but it just looks like a few photoshop filters used in conjunction, kinda reminds me of the stuff SupInfocom has done a lot. They've done watercolor, paint, charcoal, lots of stuff. Can't wait to see the animation though. Good movement and acting makes or breaks the animation..

Thanks Gary,Brett,Jeff,Marcelo,Ted and you guys,I really appreciate your comments.
To create the "Oil paint effect" I used XSI Final Gathering to create the bouncing of the lights and the colors in the scene and after I used the plugin Videogogh to create the strokes.
I used this plugin in any separated layer to obtain most better control of the strokes ( the control menu of this plugin is to short, and in some scenes whit big movements...... take her own way).
I Still looking for a most better compression in Divx (I used Premiere) to reduce the size in the AVI file and keep the effect much as possible.....Jeff,Brett and you guys are the experts....Any suggestions?.
Thanks a lot
Jose

Jose.
You should maybe try using somehting like Sorenson 3 Pro to compress. Use a 2-Pass VBR method with LOTS of Keyframes. Compressing that paint effect is going to be a serious pain...but it can be done. you should be able to get the file down to around 25mb with that method.
send me an email and ill walk you through the process.

Like I always say, I hardly give awards out for reels and such because of their diversity, but every so often a piece comes across that stands out so much there's no other way to express to the artist the way I feel towards their work. And yours my friend is one of those. Congratulations and best to you in the future.
You have received the CGtalk choice award .Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like! Very good work.
upon receiving this award, it guarantees you a spot in the cgtalk gallery hall of fame (http://gallery.cgtalk.com) - which you are now placed

Didn't compress your movie eh Joser? Me too, mine's like 81mb. Looks like me and Atte are next up to put our movies on CgTalk. I'm just waiting for the sound guy to finish my music, why it's taking four months to do it I'll never know.
Jose Manuel!!!
Looks great you must of had fun tweaking all your filters. I love the facial animation you have on your character. How was it living in a room for 2 months with the other guys?
Hope you get a job man.

It takes nearly three hours to download, but it's all worth. Really beautiful, I like the painting style very much and tried it vainly myself for a long time.
For the compression: Maybe you should give Bink a try

Very nice work Jose Manuel! congratulations on finishing such a big project and the nice look, and best of luck on the job hunt.
BTW, I don't want to be "nitpicking" (but now I am) ... did you mean "Principles" on that book cover instead of "Principals"?
The only thing that was a bit strange for me was the character's hairdo. At first I thought he was wearing some sort of headdress.
Felicidades por el excelente trabajo!!

I would have liked to have seen more animation and less reliance on the "Video Gogh" (http://www.revisionfx.com/videogogh.htm) plug-in in the short. I wish I could line up like the rest and say I was "blown away by the painterly effects.." But I wasn't really, and if I was, well, someone else created the "painterly effects" [link above]. I mean some people that go this course paint all the backdrops and textures, and that seems to work (see: watercolor SupInfocom short), but this just looks like a "paint" filter has been slapped over the short.
I am all for the use of a plugin to get a shot done or achieve an effect you have been trying to wrap your brain around, but when the ENTIRE idea, the ENTIRE short is birthed, centers, and even named after the plug-in...
I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I would have loved to have seen no "painterly effects" and just more animation, in the animated short.
But then again, that's my two pennies...

First of all I know for a fact that this project wasn't designed around the videogogh plugin. I saw jose struggling for weeks in combustion and AE trying to achieve this effect, before he bought videogogh.
Also in regards to the"resorting to a plugin comment". Just out of curiosity how the hell would you achieve the swirling effect in texture/render ? Animated textures perhaps... but then you'd have the still 3d outlines over animated surfaces... That would just look ugly.... In any case an animated effect is a lot harder to do then a static rendered still effect like watercolor.
As far as the do we all use XSI question the answer is no. There are 3 streams animation, modeling, and visual effects. Animation and modeling are (or at least when I left) xsi. Visual Effects is Maya. However all of the intro to 3d courses are taught in xsi.
Again jose I love the piece and what it conveys about the artists struggle. It's not the tools, its whats created with them.
Jose contact me at jeffb@vfs.com and we'll set something up regarding the compression.

Exactly, that's the hard thing. The most complicated, spectacular thing in the short was created by someone else. That was my point. I like the short though, many people don't even try to convey a story. I mainly wish there would have been more animation.

Odd that you would put it that way. You make it sound like video gogh is a set it and forget it plugin. jose did this all in layers applying the effect tweaking it nailing the look he wanted for every element. Again sadly you can't tell this due to the compression. You're making it sound like he hit a button and got a look. It didn't happen that way.
Thats like saying anyone who uses a fur plugin for a 3d program can hit a button and get a look. WE all know it doesn't work that way, because each of us has a unique project with unique problems. Don't bash man for use of a plugin if you don't know the whole story.

You're right, sorry, I had just gone to the web site and seen stuff that looked very similiar to what he had done. Perhaps those people did the same layering things he did, I'm unsure. Anyway, email me if you want discuss it, as we should take this private.

Hey Jose, the short was great! I liked the filter. The animation was pretty good the only thing is that I saw some movements that were not needed. If you would, take a look for example at the shot where he rips the drawing down. The right arm swings back and when it falls it seems to catch pretty bad. There are a few other places but over all not a bad piece! :)
