View Full Version : Using Clothilde to wrap around Object

Hi, first timer here. I looked around and didn't find anything that could help me.

How would I go about wrapping a cloth around an object like a sword? Animating upwards. Using Clothilde (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=47&t=419762&highlight=cloth)?

Can I use Clothilde (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=47&t=419762&highlight=cloth) to do this? Any ideas or hint would be great. Thanks.

Hi, you mean something like this ?
http://rapidshare.com/files/18477836/cloth_wrap.rar.html (c4d + avi)

*Sorry about RS but I couln't think of some better place to host it right now :P

All parameters of cloth engine default except checking on 'self collisions' and changing 'sub sampling' to 5.

Ps. As you can see it's also my 1st post here, so I hope it'll be helpfull :P

I'm not sure what you mean by "wrapping around a sword. Animating upwards." Can you expand a little on what you're trying to do?

I've attached a link showing what i'm trying to do. Cloth wrapping around the sword in an upward motion. Just like the poster. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks Aludan (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=269612) but thats not really what i meant. The cloth is animating upward. But that doesn't really matter. I need to figure out how to have cloth wrap around an object similar to the link i supplied. Thanks for the help though.

Your link does not work. Try tinyurl.

Link should work now.

I would use Mograph Spline Wrap or Sweep nurbs on a spline (probably need a rail spline).
Then throw in Mograph Displace deformer, or Wind, or displacement or Nickl to deform it as it "wraps". Would be much easier than using clothilde.

That sound promising. Any tutorials on using the MoGraph Spline wrap?

Honestly, I think just a sweep nurb will do you better.
Here is a quick and dirty set-up.
Uses Mograph, SweepNurb (animated growth), Wind.
I just tweaked a few odd settings to get it to look right. Needs to be re-done for sure.

No problem! Hope it works for you. Be sure to post some results of what you get.

Forgive me if i am wrong, but wouldn't that be really easy in cloth? just wrap a mesh around the sword, give the sword a colider tag and make gravity in the negative and add slight wind in any direction....im not really that good in any aspect of c4d, but that sounds easy if you know your way just, a little bit, around cloth.

I think you're probably right. Could be performed using Clothilde. The reason I went the direction I did is because, based on his reference image, there is not any interaction between the cloth and the sword. This lead me to reason that using a sweepnurb and some displacement/wind would acheive the desired result in a very controlled manner without having to add any dynamic simulations into the mix, which, as we all know can be hard to grapple with when they become unruly. Just keeping it simple :)
Now if the cloth interacts with the sword then that's a whole other ball of slimy goo.

Yeah your right, but since i'm using R9.1 i was just curious about using clothilde for similar effect :)

It was hard to control it (i've tried many wind/turbulece settings) but anyway i decided to post it as it looks quite nice to me :P
(not exactly as in reference image)

You know i did try doing it with Clothilde. But i just couldn't figure out how to make the cloth actually rap around the sword. I could make it contact the sword and drop over it like a table clothe. But to actually rap around it. I just couldn't get it to work.

Any ideas would be great. Although what Mr. Wesware supplied will work just right! Thanks again!
