I'm new here and have been very impressed by the information on offer.

I've been playing with the (Lobber) L-Glass shader in Maya 8 and followed his excellent tutorial which gives great results. The only problem I now have is adding a label (decal) texture to the glass surface (i.e. bottle with label). From the tutorial it appears that you've got to add the file map to the transparency button on the glass shader. When I try this, the decal does not appear in the perspective window and the glass does not render properly.

Has anyone got an "idiots guide to adding labels to L-Glass shader"? I am new to Maya an would be grateful for some step by step instructions.

Thanks in advance...

If I was putting a label on a bottle I think I would just model the actual geometry for the label onto it and offset it like .0001 units so it doesn't overlap. Then you don't have to worry about making complex shading setups, you can be sure that the label will look properly when refracted through the bottle and then you have the option of easily removing it or moving it if you animated it. If you did want to add the label only with shaders I would try to use the mix8layer shader, put lgass in slot2, put a different shader for the label in slot1, then apply your alpha for the label to the slot1 alpha in the mix8.

Thanks for your help. I was coming around to the same thoughts about modeling a label. Any ideas about applying text to the L-Glass shader (printed text on a bottle)?

I would use francescas mix8layer shader to layer your glass together with another shader for the printed text. You will have more control over the look and it's a handy shader to learn how to use anyways.
