View Full Version : sss see through object
grootvriend 02-24-2007, 10:11 PM I want to create an object with an other object inside it which can be seen when light is emited from the back of the object. So I thought use Maya's 'miss fast simple' shader, do all the nescecery connection so that the SSS works and put a light (with depth map shadows)behind the object . As usual it is not ment to be. It doesn't show any sign of the object. It only works when I put the 'inside' object between the light and the object in which it should be.
Can anyone give me some pointers on what I might be doing wrong or with which settings I must play to make the magic happen?

If your trying to go for this look http://static.highend3d.com/tutorialimages/135/blocker.jpg
which is the first picture on this tutorial http://www.highend3d.com/maya/tutorials/rendering_lighting/shaders/135.html
What about if you wanted to create the effect of something being 'inside' the SSS object, like bones inside a gelatin hand? All you need to do is create the objects that go inside, and apply the same SSS material to them. It treats them as 'blocking' objects that block the light:
In that render you can see that there is a sphere contained in the left cube, and a cone (though harder to see) in the right cube. All four objects share the same shader and are almost entirely weighted towards the back scatter colour.

I did the same tutorial yet read one little part wrong. The part says that I need to give the blocking object the same sss material. And now...... it works like charm.
Thank you!
