Hey there,

regarding your question about a pen outline, you can use Mental Ray contour lines, its very easy, and you can get a quick good result. For a simple outline do the following>

In case you haven't used MentalRay before, you must activate it, from the render scene menu, in the Assign Renderer Menu.

1. In the material editor, select the slot containing the material you want to display the outlines.

2. At the bottom of the material editor, find the menu called mental ray connection,

3. Look for the contour slot in the advanced shaders menu, and clic the corresponding none button,

4. When the material browser appears, it will show you only the contour shaders available, Select simple (contour)

5. Press F10 and go to the Render Scene menu, On the upper side of the menu click the Renderer Tab.

6.On the Camera Effects menu locate the Contour sub menu and check the box to activate the effect.

7. This is a Post/render effect so you will see the contours after all the calculations are done.


Hope this might work for you, then, you can try other contour shaders to get different effects.
