Great sketchbook, I like your style, I especially love the Image with the chick on the bike, it sort of reminds me of AKIRA.

This came out from a portrait session, I did this for fun between work and sleeping time.
It seems that when I paint faster than usual 1h30/2h for each portrait, what comes along is better than when I concentrate on details. The rendering is interesting, I will try to
experiment this technique on my upcoming works.
Photoshop/ around 6 hours. (some photo references used)

Photoshop / 3 hours
Still trying to get the best result with fast technique-
I start painting without doing a line art, I begin with round basic brushes and
build the image by color strokes. I try not to add too many details and stay concentrate on
the main purpose. It's mainly basic brushes, except the texture on the armor and the
clothes.
Comments and crtitiques are welcome.

Linework is nice and flowing. I think the speedpaint-technique is helping you! Beautiful varied style too.

Again, an experiment trying to keep speed sketching techniques till the end of the process, ahah, finally I see results.
I will post a wip soon. Original resolution 3500 height. It took about 6 hours in Photoshop.
(It seems to work, I begin to believe that I lost precious hours before painting this way.
We learn everyday here.)
Again, comments and crits are welcome.:wise:

Generally, keeping your eyes on the big picture is sometimes a great step for beginning to realize what you're really capable of. Work without details, and keep your eyes constantly watching the screen or the artwork that you're working on. Do you know what blind contouring is? You basically follow that sort of philosophy in your process. Don't let the details bug you because I know it bugs the hell out of me. When you concentrate on details, you also make mistakes and then you have to clean up and redo those mistakes when you could just start without details until the end when you've got the entire image ready to be touched up.
I think your handling of color is priceless, the painted feeling is there (it's both artwork and realistic) and you've got a great sense of value in your black and white portraits which I dig! That angle with the B&W girl is just fun to look at.
Do you sleep at all?

Hi, everyone, thanks for the comments, it's been a long time, I was so busy last weeks.
Finally I found some time to post new things.
(check out the "stormrider" in the 2d showcase gallery)
I'm begining a new serie for my next exhibit so I'm starting as well a new serie of speed painting. It keeps me concentrate and in the same time I can relax betwwen the big pieces.
Here is the begining of this new speed painting session.
2 hours and a half, Photoshop CS. (I'm thinking about making a serie about latino women)

Lots of great paintings! I can't believe you can get a result like this in 2 hours! In 2 hours I usually have a mushy pool of unrecognisable colors and lines ...

Still the "riders" serie, the subject is to represent a character riding a vehicle or an animal, very simple, in fact. Here is the last one, it's still a sketch so I thought it would be good to post it here. 3 hours in Photoshop, not so fast because I lost One hour and a Half finding the apprpriate point of vue. I will post wip here as it goes on.
:D Greetings to Vahn, danielh68, arnocob, Gisaiagami, and all of you !

wow Kaladen, i love the rider so far. great idea to do a series of that. awesome subject.
i know this is a wip, and it looks great so far, the arm of the rider looks like it isnt going back in perspective too well yet though. i'm sure the pic will look awesome though, made me curious and i'll be back to see how this one turns out. good work in here man:thumbsup:
greetings!

kaladen, the rider is excellent thus far. I'm anxious to see how you develop it further. You've succeeded at adding a new and refreshing design to the "rider" motif. The camera angle and the exaggerated perspective is top notch, as well. Great work :)

Hello,
dragonfury again !
Well, I decided to focus on the background wich is usualy my weakness.
It's still a wip, so many things are still missing but it begins to turn cool. The main goal during this step is to find the atmosphere, light and palette.
I didn't correct yet the rider's arm (you were right about it Jan !)
Still a lot to do, but I have to go back to work.
Greetings to all.

I also like that girl on the bike (awesome looking bike!). I like the slightly anime/child-like style of her.

:)
Wow!
a lot of good stuff, but the last one is really amazing!
Perhaps I would prefer the clouds (on the right part) in the previous step though...
My opinion is that you should keep the background less defined than the foreground , in order to keep mouvement...
I know it's a wip, so...
It's so promising, and who knows : an award?
bye

Your last wip has got a powerful dynamism. Subscribed thread !

Ok, thanks for the comments, I think Arno is right with the background, as it is, I will know concentrate on the dragon and rider. When i will reach the right amount of details on the foreground I will go back to background. Doing this, it will avoid lost precious time working on pointless details on the background. This is a close up of the dragon head, I thought that a primitive helmet would work well here, the rider and the dragon should come from the same culture so, same kind of helmet and cloths etc...
note (there's a structure layer wich is not visible here so many elements are not yet visible)
Greetings to all.

Still working on, i didn't have so much time to continue, I began to paint the inner energy that comes out from the chest, in fact the dragon and the character (rider) are suposed to have this kind of glow effect that comes from inside.

Wow, that dragon / rider is so in-your-face! The details are marvelous too! I'm looking forward to seeing this finished.
Hmm, let's see if I can find something constructive ... the inside of the rider's foot could use a bit of blue from the dragon's blue glow.

wonderful works. i'd love to see more. :)

06-04-2007, 03:44 AM
I t begins to look like what I had in mind, i didn't correct the right foot yet (still missing some blue reflect, thaks Rico) :)
I 've started to finish the wings, then i will go on with the bucles, horns, leather srtaps, rider's details, background that misses a bit of life etc... and off course the rider's weapon. (I guess it will also need a post work on depth, lens focus and contrasts)

Hello to everyone,
Thanks for the comments, I hope to find some time to finish the dragon and riders serie, in fact, I have three more to accomplish and the serie is finished. It will be part of my next exposure. I 'm working on an Animation for Marvel Comics and it takes most of my time. When I'll be back from UK and when my schedule will allow it, I will finish it, that's a promise.
Thanks again,
Cheers and keep making those incredible images.
Special greetings to
Arno :-), Gisaiagami, CyborgJA, jpedro
(I'll post some comments on your work later)
