Hi everybody,
I'm actually doing my "small" bathroom to make some lighting tests.
Here is my render after some tests :
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/6492/wip2cp7.th.jpg (http://img340.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wip2cp7.jpg)

I'm working with Maya 8.5, the render was made with MR. I created a Physical Sun and Sky with default parameters. Here are the parameters for the light, GI and FG :
http://img479.imageshack.us/img479/2840/parametersng0.th.jpg (http://img479.imageshack.us/my.php?image=parametersng0.jpg)

The general aspect of the image could be good enough for me but with more light in the whole bathroom. But I don't know exactly how to do it for these reasons :
- If I increase the "Photon Intensity" I have a "burn" aspect on some areas where light directly hit the walls etc...
- I don't want to make corrections on photoshop, I want the best image with maya only.

What is the best way to achieve :
- I have to add other lights to increase the general lighting of he scene ?
- Can I change some GI or FG parameters to have what I want ?
- If I increase the "Global Illum Photons", it will be better ? (I did not test yet because my PC takes his time lol, about 3 hours to rendre this scene :()

So I think that's all for the moment.
Thanks

Hi,

what you need is a tone mapper to help you get rid of the hot spots and get a better tone balance after you increase your photon intensity (burn outs). you shouldn't need to add more lights.

simply attach the "mib_exposure_simple" shader to your camera and tweak the settings and read the help file from the attribute editor.

that should get you started.

good luck,

andy

You can also try ramping up your final gather or global illumination scale, this might blow it out more than you want but give it a try, it has worked for me before. When you click on the color next to global illumination scale it will bring up the color picker, all you have to do is type in a number greater than 1 in the value. not too much more though or it will be way blown out. like i said its a trick that has worked for me in the past, might be worth a shot

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you just using planes for the walls? If you are, give them some thickness. That should get rid of that light leaking effect in the corners and around the edges.

Also, have you tried increasing the Final Gather Accuracy? That will increase your render times, but should clean up the splotchiness a little.

Hi,
Here is the new image that I have after many changes in my parameters
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/7051/wip7mi7.th.jpg (http://img179.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wip7mi7.jpg)

This render is better in term of homogen lighting and less "burn" aspect.
I removed the "Physical Sun and Sky" and put a simple spotlight with the parameters below.
I also change all the GI and FG parameters reducing all the values. The render is the same quality and the render time is only 35mins (3hours for the first)
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/4961/parametreson9.th.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/my.php?image=parametreson9.jpg)

-> a 23 : I also put a mia_exposure_simple to my camera which allow me to have this homogen render. I did not understand every parameters (more tests needed) but there are some good things to do with.

-> nmcelmury : I did'nt put a ramp to the FG or GI scale but I just increase the value to 3 or 4 I don't remember. It brights all the scene without "burning" the direct light

-> PDuff : I don't use simple planes for the walls. It's a box that I have cut to make holes for the window, the door etc. The edges are rounded with bevels.
For the moment l don't try to clean up the splotchiness, I just try to have the best illumination and only after being satisfied I will increase the FG accuracy to have a better image.

BUT, I have another problem !!
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/8900/detailsst7.th.jpg (http://img179.imageshack.us/my.php?image=detailsst7.jpg)

It looks like there is another light source but I don't understand where. I have only one spotlight in my scene and there is this sort of reflection or other light illumination.
I don't really know what to do but I think i will begin the lighting from scratch again.

If you think about something, I'm here !!

Thanks for all, testing again...

So I finally found the problem of the extra light source.
http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/4840/wip8ea3.th.jpg (http://img157.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wip8ea3.jpg)

In the render settings I changed a parameter that I modified, without knowing why.
So I change it again and put the Format parameter to Regular instead of Detail.
Then, the extra light is'nt here anymore.

I've made that but I don't really understand what this parameter do.
If someone has an explain it will be cool.

Thanks a lot
