Hello, I've very new to maya and I'm using the book, Learning Autodesk Maya 8 Fundamentals, and I've made the first step - a garage scene - but now I need to go into the hypershade/render/persp (panels -> saved layouts -> hypershade/render/persp) in order to start working on the shaders and textures, but for some reason, when I open the garage and try to turn it on, it won't work - it says: Error: Only one instance of this panel type allowed: renderWindowPanel.

The hypershade/render/persp opens fine on a new project that I haven't created anything on yet, but it won't work on my garage scene. Does anyone know why this is and how I could fix it? I really wanna get back to working with maya (I'm having a blast while doing it), but I'm stuck T_T. Any help at all is greatly appreciated!

This has been the single most irritating thing for me since my work upgraded to Maya 7 (though im not sure its just restricted to that). Basically Maya thinks that you have the render view window open somewhere, even when you don't. The best way to get your
window arranged like that would just be to do it yourself. Choose one of the other presets which splits the view into three windows and then go into the panels menu and select the ones you want afterwards.

As far as the render view goes thats how you can get that back again. Change your window to render view and then select 'Tear Off' and you get your floating render view window back again.

Good luck

I would like to add that this is a bug in your Maya file, if you would import your whole scene in a new file then this problem is most likely gone.

I've had this happen only 3 or 4 times in the last few years, but it is very annoying :)
