WIP THREAD:
HARDCORE MODELING: Ray Harryhausen Tribute: Diorama (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=453640)

FINAL ENTRY:
This is the Sinbad/Kali fight scene from The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. Kali was the creature I remembered most from watching those movies as a kid, so that's why I choose her.
There were two Kali models used in the movies, there was a full sized one which was actually on the set with the actors, and a miniature that was used for the animation.
The full sized one had a lot more detail so I was making a version of that, rather than the miniature.

http://www.pixelwerks.be/pictures/kali_final_L.jpg

It's all Lightwave, with some mudbox sculpting for Sinbad's clothing. It took a couple of weekends and some weekday evenings.

And the Winner..

http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/misc-2005-07/paperclip.gif HARDCORE MODELING!: Ray Harryhausen Tribute: Cyclops (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=460332)

I'm going to have to call this done as I have other commitments that I have been ignoring to do this challenge. I just had to do something for this challenge as Ray Harryhausen has been such an influence on my life, as he has been to so many other especially of my generation. The Cyclops from the Seventh Voyage left an indelible mark on me as a child one that has stayed with me to this day so, I chose to recreate it. I worked on this for about two and a half weeks. Working between 6 to 10 hours a day. It would probably have taken less time if I new what I was doing. This is the first time that I have ever modeled a full figure from scratch. I learned a lot and had a blast doing it. I used Modo for the base mesh, created the displacement, bump and color maps in ZBrush rendered in Modo ,and used PhotoShop to composite the renders. I hope you like it.

HARDCORE MODELING CHALLENGE #8: JOHN MCCLANE (DIE HARD-1988) - FULL MODEL

(MY WIP THREAD LINK (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=479083))

Thank God! I've finished the model before the deadline. Actually there are lots to do but i've decided very lately to make a full body for this model and most of the model has been done on last ten days on and off. I couldn't decide about the pose and changed it few times. Then came up with this pose. I don't have time to get feedback about the pose so i hope you'll like it. Textures, hair, pose, hands and fine details still need work, so i'll continue this model on the WIP forums after the challenge.

About the beauty shot,
I've worked on the textures and shaders on last 2 days and made the render tests on last day. So i don't consider the shot as a beauty render exactly =)
Please see the below nontextured renders- which has a better lighting setup- and the turntable to evaluate the model.

It was great to participate this challenge guys. I enjoyed it a lot.
Thanks for the great support and nice comments on my threads. They mean a lot to me.

There are some great entries on the challenge. It will be hard time for voters to pick one of them.
Good luck everyone!

Comments:

After quiting my job, doing boring architectural visualisations (no offence anyone), I decided this challenge is perfect for me to test my 3D skills to the limit. At the start I had a vision of portraying the General in an unconventional way, without the usual lightsabers and fighting poses. I wanted him to appear more human (or alien if you will), than robot. It was my goal to pose him in a way to express his fearless soul and desire for battle, yet at the same time I wanted to show desperation in his intentions...perhaps that is the reason his lightsaber has not been ignited. Ok, I have not slept for days and I am talking utter crap, so to wrap it all up, I had an amazing time taking part in this challenge and I wish everyone good luck tomorrow.

The final model depicts a wildebeest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildebeest) being taken down by a lion. The model is showing them as they are tumbling on the ground after the lion has jumped it during a high speed pursuit.

I really wish I'd had much more time on this, but it was a very fun challenge. I learned alot about Zbrush, anatomy and about sculpting. This was achieved both by trial and error, but also by following the other threads in the challenge. Alot of great work were the outcome of this challenge.
Thank you for your comments everyone and good luck on the next one ;) I'm really looking forward to it.

I've always been somewhat facinated by asian culture so I had to pick the Grand Buddha at Ling Shan. Originally I wanted to take this piece a little bit further but I am happy with the end product. I wanted to bring it to life but with a somewhat stylized look. I didnt really strive for edgeflow on this piece as it being a statue would probably not have to move much, plus sometimes its way more fun to sculpt

COMMENTS

Congrats to everyone that made it!

I'm happy to say...this is my first model that was done entirely in Zbrush, no other app has been used at any point except for photoshop for compositing the beauty render. I could also experiment with hard surfaces. A good learning experience, although mixed with my moving out of India for some time (and partying is necessary), so I only worked a few (5-6) nights on it.

If you are interested on a walkthrough of this character, you can see video recordings of all the work I did on it in the wip thread. So far only the head is ready to watch but I'm planning on finalizing the whole body in a few days. Gotta say I finished half the character last night so the upcoming videos might not be too educational for some people.

COMMENT:

Since I originally planned on doing more than a bust, I figured the arm would probably connect to something (e.g., the rest of his body ). Unfortunately, that didn't happen so I left it out. I did toy with the idea of including it on the table in my 'workshop' video, but it became too cluttered and distracting ( and I also didn't finish texturing it).

Special thanks to Terry and Richard for their reference material. Original Design by Syd Mead.

Thanks to everyone for their support in the WIP thread and Congrats to everyone that has finished!

This is the 2nd time, i'm in a hardcore modelling challenge and i'm quite glad that i was able to do up this piece of work which i intially wanted to try out during hcm09-starwars tribute. While C3po was mainly a good test of my subdivisional modelling skills, R2d2 was alittle bit more hardsurface. Based on a concept art and some reference from toys, i needed to guess some of the finer details that were missing or vague.

I'm quite glad that i managed to do up the texturing of r2d2 with my limited knowledge of unwrapping as well as time.

estimated time spent on this project would be roughly 50+ hrs

Comments:

Cain was a particular difficult model to create since it has so many irregular shapes and lines, and because

I had to rely on several sources of references which came from different models in different poses

(8 models was created for the movie + a full size torso). Also its non-symmetrical and has four arms with almost no identical elements.

However I am relatively happy with the result and the time it took to recreate this fabulous design.

I spend roughly 65-70 hours on this including reasearch.

Special thanks to HenrikBC for support, advice and critique.

Also a special thanks to Insroo for his support and generous supply of reference material.

WIP THREAD
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthr...?f=208&t=663654 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=663654)

DESCRIPTION
This is the third of 3 models I finished for this challenge. It's Pumpkinhead, created for the movie with the same name, directed by Stan. In his hand, a motorcycle chain. Watch the movie to know more about it.

Details:
100% poly painted in Zbrush. Base mesh modeled in Maya, imported in Zbrush for rapid prototyping, retopologized in Maya, back to ZBrush for detail reprojection and further fine detailing and posing using Transpose Master. No images were used for texturing, only regular alphas. The final mesh has about 12 million polys but it was rendered with one subD level less, at 3 million polys, imported directly to Maya. No displacements nor normal maps/bump used. Everything is pure geometry. Rendered in Mental Ray with 4 area lights. FastskinSSS shader used. Only color map and cavity map used (cavity plugged into the ambient slot). Render time: about 25 minutes each, on a Dual Quadcore + 8GB RAM, running Maya 2008 and Zbrush 3.1

I had a blast. Congrats to everybody who managed to finish and thank you all who stopped by my thread to say hello.

Cheers,
-Kris

Comments:
This is my main final entry image. It should capture the style of an advertising in a magazine for Mechwarriors or a poster or something like that. Keep in mind, that the Battletech is quite an old invention, and my ad should match in there.

Another beauty Image i want to show is a stylization done by a friend of mine in photoshop, based on the clay render, which will be linked further down.

Ok, this was my first try with shadow maps in an animation. I messed up something, so they are flickering. But i think i now learned how to set them up correctly.

Description
My Entry is a cutaway of the Vulture (Mad Dog) Battlemech, known from the Battletech Universe and Mechwarrior Games.

As Reference i mainly used the "blueprint" from FASA, which illustrate a half cutaway vulture from orthographic front view. As additional reference for the 3D look of the model i used Artworks mainly from classicbattletech.com
http://www.classicbattletech.com/im...ver@800x600.jpg (http://www.classicbattletech.com/images/gallery/Reinforcements_Cover@800x600.jpg)
http://www.classicbattletech.com/im...utaway@full.jpg (http://www.classicbattletech.com/images/gallery/MadDog_Cutaway@full.jpg)
Thanks to Hypernaut and the battletech.info (http://www.battletech.info/forum/index.php) community for some references, especially to Vulture_MaxPaint (http://www.battletech.info/forum/member.php?u=1229), who helped me to some high res images of the blueprint.
More references can be found here:
http://www.classicbattletech.com/in...Mech_Technology (http://www.classicbattletech.com/index.php?action=text&page=BattleMech_Technology)
http://www.twobt.de/655.0.html
And of course, the original Blueprints from FASA:
http://www.amazon.com/Omni-Mech-Blu...28484284&sr=8-1 (http://www.amazon.com/Omni-Mech-Blueprints-Battletech-1661/dp/1555601480/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228484284&sr=8-1)

Programs i used for this entry are: Maya, Mental Ray and Photoshop.
I think i worked on an average 2 to 3 hours a day (sometimes more, sometimes less) on this entry, barring the last two weeks, where i had nearly no time for this.

Thanks for watching! Thanks for all your comments and thanks for that great challenge!

I hope you like it.

I really enjoyed making this model and attempted a faithful representation.
I wish I had found more references to build the inside of the church but for some reason there just are not very many on the web.

I also learned quite a bit. For instance, before this project I did not know how to mix textures on a single object with vertex paint. Doing so really helped add variety to the ground.

I have about four weeks worth of work into this.
It was all created in 3DS Max 2008 64 bit and rendered in Mental Ray. CS2 Photoshop for textures.
Final comp done with Windows Live Movie Maker.
In the final video I did no post processing other than the addition of text.

I sure hope I am not forgetting anything. :curious:

Good luck, to everyone participating and a big thanks to Roberto

In this challenge I wanted to get a good representation of the original photo. I've used alot of simple modelling with primitives and low level techniques to get finished within the timeframe. I did have time to work on some of the finer details like the lionheads and the trees. What I would have liked to work more on is the texture work, but as this is a modelling challenge my focus was mainly on getting objects done.

Most of the work has been done in 3ds max, and some parts altered in Zbrush. Textures are mostly just standard materials of max, but a few polypainted in Zbrush and modified in photoshop. Renders done with Mental Ray.

Thanks for setting up the challenge I had a good time with it and I hope everyone else did as well. Good luck to everyone

Hiya,

I attempted the mimic octopus:

This fella was discovered in the 90's and nobody knew what he was since he did a convincing job of mimicking the environment as well as other sea creatures!(For example he/she would bury himself and leave only a tentacle showing to mimic an eel).

This was very hard and also very rewarding on self-confidence. I learned to run a marathon and not a rush as I always have to do. The most important part was to learn when to stop detailing and skip to another model. I tried to keep the step of one model a day but I have to reschedule to dedicate more tome to some of the model. I didnt' spend time to do textured render since I preferred to focus on cleaning the model and do constistent geometry (and also to put as much quads as needed to ensure future comaptibility with displacements maps and bump maps if needed) this part was very important and time consuming when you have to do with boolean (like in the ipods, pads and so on): i hope this choice wont' penalize me ;)
I also would like to thank all the community and expecially Roberto as always for this opportunity.
Cheers to all !
Giorgio

It was the 16th of September when I entered this challenge, with the basic idea in mind that I’ll go for 10 or maybe 20 models if I’m fast enough. I have no idea how it turned out to be 30, considering that I have made the last 6 items in 2 days only. So I guess that this challenge did make me a faster modeler, so thank you for that! I enjoyed it a lot! I used Maya for modeling, Mental Ray for rendering and Photoshop for everything else.

Description: Spawn is on of my favorite characters. A demoniac soul with some kind of "good" mission. I always wanted to do a Spawn and with this challange i had the opportunity and inspiration. i Tried to keep all of the Spawn's features, but giving a bit of my interpretation too. I did a simple Zsphere basemesh to the body and all subtools are made in Max. Using the Zbrush Decimate, i put all in to Max and rendered with mental ray. Composed with Photoshop.
Thank you Todd to your inspiring work!

This is a complete kitchen of Gusteus, a great chef.A very clean and posh environment, all necessary euipments to make this kitchen more attractive. When i heard about Pixar tribute i decided to make Ratatouille kitchen, I love the set up and all Kitchen Euipments since i watch the movie. As I am learning modelling, I am inspired by this Kitchen and wanted to make pixar models,i am very much inspired by the fine details in this kitchen and wanted to do the same.It took around 20-25 days to complete this scene, daily i used to model a single prop.As this is modelling challenge so i put more concentration only in modelling and not done shading part. Each renders took 12 mins (approx).I did those models with all my passion and enjoyed this challenge

HMC #31 - Pixar Tribute - Buzz Lightyear (lapachi) (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=987395&page=1&pp=15)

COMMENTS & DESCRIPTION

First of all, I'd like to thank again Roberto Ortiz and every person for such a beautiful challenge, it was fun and I kinda felt like being a part of that beautiful family of Pixar during this challenge.

From the very beginning, my goal was to recreate Buzz Light Year as close as possible to the real model, to capture the mood and characteristics of him. I've worked lots of hours on his proportions and I even had to remodel his body couple times for that. It was tough but I think I managed to model him just as he deserves (though I'm not 100% satisfied)

Anyways, it was fun being in challenge with you guys and Good Luck everybody !

Oh, and here is the link to my extra animation of Buzz. Hope you Enjoy it:

* Description : Syndrome "The Incredibles"

Here is "Syndrome" on which I had a great time to work. It was an very interesting excercice for me to interprete the references I took from the movie and internet to construct a neutral version of this fantastic character, an excellent occasion too to improve my hair method and to learn about. I've spend two hour/day during two month and I used Softimage for the whole modeling step, Zbrush for body's volume ajustments as well as Zsphere for the hair base construction, Photoshop for textures and MentalRay for render.
I've been very happy to participate among very talented artists at this harcore modeling challenge, this allowed me to learn and appreciate a little more the great work they are doing at Pixar.
Thank you one more time guys for all your comments and feedbacks during my WIP and Roberto Ortiz for setting up this challenge.
