View Full Version : BAKING!! What is it?
Maya Ayanami 02-28-2003, 03:49 AM What is Baking? I have herd of it and I have seen it laying around somewhere in Maya and things. But I have no idea what the hell it is. Is it for cookies or pizzas or something.

Its sort of like a command that allows you to compute processes before you play an animation or render...Also you won't have to bake more than once unless you make changes ...
Is there a specific instance you seek a answer for?
like bake simulation....
or bake keys?
they are all a little different

or bake lighting?

Yeah it basically 'saves' it.
Baking a simulation 'saves' the simulation by converting it to keyframe animation.
Baking your lighting usually creates texture maps that store the shading as well as the colour/bump etc.
Baking something stops it from being recalculated again.

...at the cost of a heeeuge amount of disk space if you want to cache particles or cloth:)

Yeah, for particles it creates 1 file for each particle per frame I think.
So 200 particles (which is not many) over 100 frames = 20 000 files!
But, it means you can scrub the timeslider back and forth and it will play properly. And you can be assured (most of the time) that your particles will render exactly how you want them too.

For Dynamics:
Edit > Keys > Bake Simulalation
For Shaders:
Shift-pick the object in the view and the material swatch in Hypershade.
Select Edit > Convert to File Texture in Hypershade.
For Baking file textures onto fur
From within a fur description's Attribute Editor choose Bake Attribute.
And they're the most common ones!
