View Full Version : My first blender / sculpting test ...
everlite 02-21-2007, 08:43 AM Hey guys,
Downloaded Blender a few hours ago and was pretty impressed with the software, especially the sculpting tools, held together really well, simple but good. I'm an experienced Max user and familiar with zbrush but never really given Blender a good try, i'm very glad i did :-)
Thumbs up  to the blender team.
See my first blender model:

Not sure how to render with blender just yet (have'nt done anything else except scult since i downloaded it :-) so the above was exported as an obj and rendered in Maya with a basic light setup.
Cheers - Dave.

that pretty awesome :)
really good for a first try of blender to; to render turn AO on, set AA to 11 with 'mitch filter', place 3 light sources, 1 sun light next to camera, 2 hemi lights behind and to the side of the model.
make these lights (sun)white, (hemi behind)light blue, (hemi at side)light orange.
Hit render :)
thats the basic setup i use, also turn of spec for material, which helps a lot
jup, a very nice sculpt indeed!

Hey thanks.
I'll give the light set up a go and see what i come up with.

Welcome to the world of Blender.
Just don't try the game engine or it will suck up all of your time

Thanks, though the game engine seems a little advanced for me. When it comes to code, i just don't have a clue. Have there ever been any successful games produced with blender?

- Dave. well, what do you mean when you say: "successful"?
and you dont really have to know programming, you can use the logic bricks, though if you do know python(and perhaps even glsl!), that will make it easier and open up more possibilities, yeah..

By successful i mean a complete game that can be played? I'm not very familar with blender, are you able to build games with it? Like a full game from beginning to end? Code for me is like an alien language, i've tried many times and failed :-) So can you do quite a bit these logic bricks?

nice work
i think Club Silo is the best one so far
its still a demo, but quite playable...:)

:-) So can you do quite a bit these logic bricks? well, considering i have seen a basic map-editor like thingie made purely in logic bricks id say quite cool, they are, if only youll take the time to learn to use them(just like it is with anything else).. and for the best possible user-support on blender i sugest you check out the blenderartists.org (http://blenderartists.org/forum/index.php) forum when you happen to have the need ;)

If you're interested in the game engine, check out this (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/BSoD/Introduction_to_the_Game_Engine). I just downloaded the PDF version yesterday and I'm planning on tinkering with things a bit. The tutorial is written for 2.42, but it should work.:)
BTW, nice sculpt! *Goes to improve own modeling skills*

Here's another link (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/BSoD/Introduction_to_the_Game_Engine) to the same place, and the full url in case that doesn't work.

Looks great, but I liked your first one a lot better.

Cheers mate, yeah i agree, the first one's better, though i like the hard edges on the second one. I've just created a video tutorial demonstrating the basic sculpt tools:
http://shared.zanqdo.com/blender_sculpt_demo_1.mov (59mb - QT - right click, save target)
(just noticed the video get's a little screwy half way through, i'll fix that shortly :-)
Hope it can be a use.
Cheers - Dave.
thanks - downloading the video right now :3

Welcome to the Blender community! On your second sculpting, did you use Blender's Ambient Occlusion to render? If you did, you can increase the Samples to get rid of the noise.

Hi, thanks.
No at the time i wasn't too familar with the Blender renderer so i exported to Maya and rendered through there.
I've been playing around again this evening and came up with following sculpt:
http://www.thedaveidentity.co.uk/web/devil.jpg
Though i had to create screen grabs as my PC crashed everytime i tried to render :-)
Cheers - Dave.

For the crashing - that is exceeding your computers maximum ram again :)
Switching to linux would fix that :)
Another possibly fix is to 1) apply the multires (that should reduce your used ram by 30-50%) turn up the number of parts (each part can use less ram to render).
There are probably a lot of other tricks that skilled Blender renderer users can suggest.
