Hi people,
The Flatiron Building enduring first weeks of a nuclear winter. Luckily, the Manhattan island wasn't in the ground zero of any nuclear attacks but got its share of conventional bombardment and warfare. Inspired by some of my favourite songs and of course the beauty of the Flatiron Building itself and the ever so inspiring theme - the downfall of mankind.
For reference I used many of the good quality pictures of the Flatiron Building and its surroundings you can find with Google. Any comments and critics are most welcome.
Thanks for looking at this.

That arrangement is truely impressive!
I am absolutely in love with basically all, how you chose color palette and composition for instance and how you worked on the textures.
I just think that the car - don't hit me :P - looks a bit too painted for this so much realistic background and so maybe could have deserved some more textures.
Overall it's still a 5 stars work :)

Terveppä terve and thanks a lot for the comments, everybody!
Azurelle: I tried to keep working as quickly and painterly as possible. I'm trying to loosen up my brushwork, with better success here and less there. The car and the tank were easier and much more forgiving subjects for me than the background, so I managed to do them quickly and in a more relaxed manner. I'll try to pay more attention to the balance of brushwork in the future. Indeed, maybe some further working with textures of rust and corrosion would have done the trick with the car, because you can never have too much of those!
Danke schön.

Thanks Mr. Felker, although I'm starting to feel like I pushed the ruin and rubble too far back with the snow and haze. What the hey, maybe I reuse those in another piece. By the way, good stuff in your portfolio, especially I love the missile launch from the cruiser pic. The blunt majestic shape with the octagonal radar panels in the front of those ships is awesome.

what can one say about a piece done with such love and care? beautiful in all it's chilly eerieness. :) you already know how I admire this piece, as I have had the honour to see parts of the process, so let me try add some more to my comments from then, now in retrospect.
I really like the fact that you chose to use a lighting situation more common and everyday, than an overdramatic photoperfect sunset/sunrise. It adds to the realism and eerieness, and somehow makes it look really dead and quiet. The colourscheme is nice for that fact, but maybe some kind of light, either some blues in the shadows (although desaturated shadows adds to the dead feel to the image), or maybe a burning fire casting some lights here and there on the buildings or just the foreground elements, would have livened up the picture a tiny bit more. But it's all up to what you want to convey in the end =)
I agree that maybe the brushwork on the flatiron building is abit smooth and carefully done, compared to the car.
But I do love both styles, you've mastered the rough and the fine manner.. that's nothing new, though ;)
As usual you've got a great technique for painting destroyed buildings and rubble, which I think in some way is more difficult than painting an untouched building.
Now I just hope you will also post the wonderful nuclear winter painting, the prequel to this!

Thanks for your kind words and shared insight, Mr. Haagensen! Much, much appreciated.
In retrospect, there are a lot of things to improve with the next ones and most certainly I'll keep your comments in mind when doing them. The good thing is that the nuclear winter's just started so there's room for a few imperfections while polishing up the concept. This one was my ode for the Flatiron building: No matter how great the building it is, I think it looks even better with just a little bit of damage.
