Secondly were are some places I can get really good tutorials for useing nodes, I've checked the useual areas but I havn't found something with the detail I'd like to learn (please excuss my think skull ^_^)

To be honest I didn't get into NOdes until just recently myself. I couldn't think of any reason to use Nodes over traditional texturing methods. But I saw some very good video tutorials by eugene (http://www.geneome.net/index.php/blender-tutorials/). And discovered that there are some very cool uses for them.

I guess it comes down to personal choice as to whether you choose to learn and use them.

They offer greater power and flexibility - but the basic knowledge is the same - you can probably stick with regular textures until you feel that you are being limited by them.
