View Full Version : Animated robot, opinions please
klesk33 02-27-2003, 08:42 PM Hi, I have done this little playblast animation in maya. Its just a way to test my character´s rigging. I welcome any opinions about it.
The file is almost 2mb, so be patient. Thanks.

The robot looks really nice. Very original and appealing.
Some critics...
1) The leg slips.
2) I don't think you need to put his hand over his head to show he is curious. I think you already have got the idea across when he tilt his head.
I am really impressed with the model and the rigging looks pretty good to me. How long did the model take you? and the rigging? Is it textured yet?
Good work! :scream:

Thank you very much for your comments and the critics. I am starting to learn how to animate so I take note of all faults anyone can see.
The model took me about 2 or 3 days. The rigging a little more, it has been complicated but at last I made it work.
I want to start with texturing but its so much work...( I am a little lazy about it.;) )
Later I plan to build a scenario for the character and tell a little animated story.
Thanks again.

The rason why it looks like his feet sip is because there is no reference plane for the ground so its hard to tell how high his foot is lifted when he takes a step and the timing is off for the second step. the right foot compleetes the step to late. If you have both feet finnish the step at the same time it will look more fluid.
look cool so far!!!

This is a nice start. my main crit is that performance is somewhat generic. In the beginning especially. He is moving, but his motivation is unclear. He kind of swims through the poses. Be more specific in his poses. I'm not saying to make it cartoony, but just tighten the poses a bit. other than the part where he gets hit with the ball, the motion seems to be moving along at a contiuous pace. it's kind of hypnotic. Look for a rhythm to his movement. break up the pacing of his reactions to create an energy through the timing.
Ihope i didnt get too crazy....
good work.

Cool model.....hem ....you're right....here we are in the animation section! well...
Try to change subject, i mean..."maybe" the "ball" cannot suggest you the right Robot reactions....It is the old dear "ball"....
and try to study a "look" of the robot behaviour....now it'is not clear. It is stupid? it is goofy? it is cartoonstyle? and so on..
.
good wip

one thing I would say about this is that it doesn't seem very robotic. if you have to aniamte a robot, think about how it would be constructed and how the joints would move - have a look on the web to see if you can find some info on robotics.
one way to make it a bit more robotic would be to allow each joint to only move on one axis at a time. rotate the Y axis, but dont rotate the X until the Y has fully rotated, for example. also, dont move the whole of his body at the same time; if you move his body first and wait until that has done before you move an arm it will look infinitely better. also, i think it needs ot be a bit moresnappy, at the moment it looks like it is suffering from spline-itis ;) see what happens when you put all your curves on linear tangents. try holding limbs, locked in one position, until they need to move, then move them and dont touch them again so they zip from pose to pose but remember to keep things moving at different times - think of a robot arm in a car factory. robot joints arent as sophisticated as human joints! another thing you could do - all organic lifeforms move in arcs. this is a machine so try moving it in straight lines to get across it is more of a machine.
just some little tips that i spotted, of course you dont have to do anything i've said but see what happens when you try different things out - experiment!
hope this helps!
