View Full Version : The battle for user X
cerreto 03-28-2002, 09:52 PM alias has just lowered the cost of its software you can now get maya complete for the old price of lw 1999.00 seems times are tight i for one dont want to see alias go down and it is my hope that this is not a last ditch effort before closing !
competiton drives improvement and with this price war i expect to see software start making kick ass imrovments to compete for your dollar imagine how great apps would get if they all retailed at the same price expect version 8 to be as big as version 6 was
P.S today would be a great strategic day to release 7.3 ;)

I'd never seen Maya before, so I downloaded the Personal version (free) from the web - 150 Megs.
Now, granted I've been on Lightwave for a few years, but I didn't like the interface. I think Lightwave has a much better system, especially keeping the modelling and animation separate. The only thing that I'd really like to see in Lightwave would be a 3D painting option.
So I'm biased, I'm not going to spend months trying to figure out everything on a new system. I just hope the competition remains tough and Lightwave continues to add more features.
the good news is there are plans underway for just that.
Aura 3 and LightWave 8 are olanned to be tightly integrated thru the hub, with 3D painting of surfaces in aura and instant updating in layout.

That would be great. You have any links for this?

Sorry, but by not including any source for that speculative info about rev whatever of Lightwave, you really can't expect it to be taken anymore seriously than my claim that Newtek plans to give out free live cows and eagles(in a barrel) with LW9.
Even if it were true I find the 3D paint tools available in any 3D ap to be a bit overated and that includes AW's implementation.

I understand about the 3D paint programs, and its not enough of a enticement for me to go elsewhere. But sometimes UV maps can be a little tricky and having another way to 'mark up' a texture comes in handy.
not speculative info, came from Don Ballance (a Newtek employee and former aura product manager)
at a recent dealer open house. Take it for what its worth,
but I don't speculate.

I'd have to agree with you on Newtek maintaining a focus on Lightwave. Integration with Aura via the hub is way down on my new features wish list. (Actually it's not even on it.) However,I would like to see the hub's performance improved. Maybe in LW7.3
;>
i use aura all the time.... aura 2 freakin rocks. and don't forget about the toaster.
would you have newtek trash it as well? lightwave came from the toaster. geez....
