I finally have my copy of Inside Lightwave 7,

I haven't read everything yet (damn, it's English and 1200 pages:beer: ) but I saw chapter 10 about the face modeling and texturing.

Dan Alblan used Unwrap by Ernie Wright (I hope this is the correct site http://www.unwrap3d.com/index.html)

it looks like a very cool tool (and weeeh I have it on the Inside Lightwave cd) but there's one thing I don't understand

look at this
http://www.unwrap3d.com/images/tut_head5a.png
it's unwrapped with the ears on it
and although it's a crappy picture you can clearly see head and ear are above/under eachother... how does it look when you paint this over? will there be a blank piece or will those two parts both get the same texture?

I hope I mad my point clear and I hope someone will reply and help me

Yes, the way you show it, the pattern will be on the outside face, inside edge and skin of the head and have the same texture.

Unweld the ears from the head and hide them, then run Unwrap on the rest of the head. It's been a while since I used Unwrap, so maybe you need to cut and paste the ears into a different layer and then put them back after you run Unwrap.

7.0 handles UV mapping, though, and you may find it better to use. You still have to use Unweld to separate the continuous surfaces as you won't want to try to push/pull polys in the UV mode with the ear overlaying itself and the head.

Go here for UV mapping tutorials with Lightwave. (http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/tutorials/index.html#UV)

Good luck. :)

another problem :annoyed:
I used the plug-in from the inside lightwave cd...

when Alblan unwraps his face he gets this

when I use the plug-in with the same settings I get this....

anyone familiar with this plug-in? I could use some help here, it looks much better than the Lightwave unwrapthingy

Hi

When using unwrap, the first thing you have to do is centre your model (f2 key as default for the PC version of Lightwave)

Once you've done that do an unwrap then check your results. If the face appears on the left or right hand side with the ears and back of the head on the other side, then you may need to rotate your model around (hit the "e" key a couple of times) then try again

You might also want to check out unwrap 2. Its an updated version of the unwrap plug-in.

Hope that helps
