View Full Version : When is LW8 coming out?

Does anyone know when LW8 is coming out?

Also, does anyone have any inside info regarding what new stuff can be expected?
I am seriously praying for better character animation tools, and better rigging tools.
Also a way of seeing which points you've already weighted, its easy to forget where you've been!
Trying to get a rig to work without problems is very difficult (maybe its just me)

One last thing, does anyone know how to delete a surface name in surface editor?? AAAAAAArgh!

Please Newtek come out with a cracker for LW8, you've been quiet for far too long!

ok I just found a thread with loads of comments regarding this subject, my apologies everyone for the tedium of yet another LW8 thread.

But I still cant find out how to delete a surface name!

hmm,..just don't use the surface and when you reload the object it won't be there. Does that make any sense?

Heh this gets asked all the time.

1.) Newtek's made no murmurs about LW8. LW 5.5 came out in 97, 6 came out in 2000, and 7 came out in 2001. They don't really have a regular schedule here so there's really no way to predict until they tell us.

2.) What's wrong with 7.5? I'm still digging around it and finding cool things. I always love new tools to play with, but it's hardly inhibited.

Not trying to flame ya or anything, but I think people would agree when I say "focus on what you got."

There isn't even a sign of Lightwave 7.5b, which was said to be coming out before 2003. I guess Newtek would reveal information at Siggraph or actually suprise ppl. with it (Lightwave 8).

As for features, Newtek will probably do the plugin thing with the new DStorm plugins or others, do a little interface makeover, etc. I guess they'll continue their self-destructive pattern by not integrating plugins and keeping the architecture for Modeler and Layout seperate.

I guess we'll find out what they're up to one day.

Don't get me wrong, I think 7.5 is excellent and has everything I need. From a character animation point of view it could be improved, especially when compared with the other "big 3".
It also would be nice if rigging was easier. I kind of use a mixture between Tim Albee's setup and the 3D Buz leg rig. It would be nice to have a biped template which could be customised, like XSI does...

Oh yeah, so I have to reload an object to delete a surface name. Great.

What problems are you having with regards to character tools and rigging in particular?
You can see which points are weighted in modeler and you can see multiple maps at the same time.
You dont have to delete surfaces, unused ones automatically are flushed when you load the object in again.
Getting a rig to work without problems is something everyone in every 3D package wishes for.

Cim, I think I like your old avatar better. A badly dithered duck with a queer smile just doesn't do you justice. And why don't you just become a Lightwave betatester? That way you'll know exactly what's going on and then you could stop wasting your time with speculation.

How can you see multiple weight maps at the same time in Modeler? Any trick to showing them? If there is, i think that i missed it completly, though i dont use use weights, but i would like to know how to see them.

Thanks

hm :_(

You can rename it and if you want to delete it just do not use it, the text time you load you object you will see only the used surfaces.

Modeler---->Windows------> Vertex Maps
You can multiselect weight maps in this window and see them at the same time in weight shade mode.

Whoah, I'm glad I monitored this thread. Thanks Larry!

Question for ya: I noticed when you have two maps at once, the >100% verticies turn Cyan. Is the idea here that you can spot the points that don't get 100% influence?

P.S. Are you a familiar with a product called 'SmoothMove Panoramas"?

Yeesh man. No need to be hostile.

There are several tools there that allow you to select vertices by weight maps, by the strength of a weight maps etc etc.
I have a new tab that has all my selection tools under it.
I dont think in terms of the kind of selection I do then look for that tool, I think SELECTION, go to that tab and use the proper selection tool. :)
