Don't have any real plans for this; it's just a modeling and texturing exercise. The fish is modeled in Wings3d; radiosity rendered in Strata. No "normal" light sources - there's 2 cylinders above the fish and a flat plane behind the camera with glow map textures. They are the only source of light.

Edit: current view below - no, not that one, the next one!

Yes, I like it. It looks really wet.
But the "bubbles" look strange.

Were you after realism? If so, the fish do look too wet like thw' states. A fish in water does not look wet. I know as I have 6 huge aquariums. Also, the wet look actually makes the fish look like it's made out of plastic. The bubbles reflectiveness needs to be turned down a tad and size should be varied quite a bit.

Other than that, for a project done in Wings and Strata it's pretty good.

Hmm.... you're right. Things really only look wet when they're in the air, but have water on the surface.
Anyway, I'll post an update with the fish less "wet" looking.

Thank you, dolmuji!:)
Here's a version not as "wet". Does this look more natural?

yes, thats better... but it still needs some work on the environment... it looks like its flying instead of swimming atm :)...
maybe some blue "fog" to simulate an underwater effect

No, the lighting in indicative of a fish tank setting where you wouldn't see a foggy underwater effect. In any event, I'm not expressly interested in depicting the tank itself - just the shape and surface texture of the fish.

I may, perhaps, turn up the reflection of the far glass wall so that you can see the reflection of the further away fish.

nicely done. the fish definitely looked as if they had been shallacked in the first one though.

revision is great! (althought the lips may stick out just a bit too much at the side)

Lol, yeah, upon comparing them, it does seem as if the first version had a coating of shellac.

Thanks for the comment.

the first pic looks plastic... the second looks more realistic...

Nice anyway

Nice job, betelgeuse! If you intended to continue working on it there is a lot more you could do with it but you said in your original post that you have no real plans for it.

I have one more comment so I hope you don't mind. In your original image it looks like you had some reflection going on in the foreground. It seems like the viewer would be looking through glass into an aquarium. I though that was a nice touch (if that's what you intended). I think putting that reflection back into your second image would be cool.

Other than that, nice fish and bubbles now! :applause:

they seem very stiff thats what makes em not look like they're swimming.

Hey guys, really appreciate it!

Signal to Noise: Don't mind your comments at all.

I think I will post another update tomorrow, if I can. I'll put some glass reflection back and maybe put some bend in the fish body.

Thanks again.

it looks a little "plasticized"... but other than that, the colors are cool - kind of exotic

body doesn't need to be bent what i ment (sorry for not being more clear) was the fins, in a fish the fins move alot, like the top middle and bottom, I don't want to go have a looksi but uhh someone must be able to explain this without pictures!.

body doesn't need to be bent

That's OK. I kind of like it bend in the body anyway. If I do anything more with this fish, it'll probably be as a subset of a larger piece.

It does look a little plasticky, though, and I'm not sure how to fix that.

Thanks everyone, for your time. (and all those of you who look, but don't speak ;) - Yeah, I know, I do it too.)

I think I know what he means. The fins of a normal fish don't just move up and down, they also ripple. Lower the gloss and have the tail and fins undulate a bit.

It's beautiful though, good job.

i'm not a fish expert but most of the fish i've seen have a kind of translucent look to them... maybe that would get rid of the plastic look :)... other than that.. great work :) i like it!

Nice work! I think some transparancy / SSS (of the body) would help the realism alot. Also, I think they are too "perfect", throw a scratch or bump here and there. Again, really nice work thus far.

I think the worst thing on the images is the bubbles. They are completely physically incorrect, and look like glass instead of an air bubble...I would work on that. It's hard really, you just have to make them more dense and a lot smaller then now.....and tone the reflections down a lot....should look better after that :)
