View Full Version : Mono update
clusterfuq 02-27-2003, 06:05 PM after my dabblings with toon shading etc http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44696 think i've decided to got with my original plan of dark and moody. heres the look i'm going for. animation to follow.
the scene is at night in a childs bedroom with this little guy and a bigger robot who appears from under the bed and tries to kill him.
wanting to do something to portray the scence with the lighting and atmosphere.
any suggestions? playing with lighting and textures mainly.
more to come soon, (i'll be in uni all day 2moro!, as always!)

your model is great, but the shadow on the model is quite harsh while the shadow on the table is blurred and doesn't look like its really "there".

no problem, lighting seems to be something I pick out pretty good.

can you give me some advice. i want a really soft shadowbut still make him look 'there' as you put it, something like a skylight but without a skylight. i'm using 3 lights above him and one below to give a kind of fake radiosity look. guess i'll just keep playing.

maybe you could try to put 3 or more spots from about the same origin, very close from themselfs, with a low bias (0.1) and decreasing intensity of the light with attenuated. It will give you soft shadows. If you are working with 3dsmax, you can try to get the Script E-light that creates a dome light, it works efficiently

it depends which software your useing on how your lighting rig works. I'm personaly useing Softimage | XSI and a ton of infite lights at diffrent intensities withonly 1 light givin a shadow and a .85 umbra.

Manicalavera15: that's his enemy in the background, a big evil red robot (BigRed)
BiTMAP: i'm using max, think i'm getting somewhere. i like the glow around him which i'm doing with a falloff in the reflection, but guess i could do it with self illumination, then cut down on the lights a bit. want it simple. and the bots move alot so the lights cant be focused so much.
xasteycracker: no, i'm just doing a multimedia design course, 3d is kind of an option i'm taking. i've heard good things about bournemouth for 3d tho. search in the general forums, sure theres been a few posts about uk uni's/schools

Use infinite lights, they don't focus on a point they just shine in a direction, then make them have a rather crisp shadow... that Should let your character move anywere and have nice lighting.

directional Lights I think, lights that shine only a direction, not from a point... and so far NICE :D

cheers. i'm playing with about 6 spot lights all really close and low settings (like nanabaky suggested) getting some really nice results. softer shadows. area shadows in max just buggered up during animation.
doing textures for the other bot now. i'll update soon.
got 2 months to finish this baby. :bounce:

woah new banner! :O lol, well I think his foot needs to move... maybe have the "toes" be what pushes him upwards (he needs to have some notion of something pushing him up) other then that his eyes seem stiff... but its not bad. :D

i did play briefly with having his 'toes' move but the jump happens to quick and it just looked wrong. noted about the eyes tho, think i might have to ease those curves!
