Hey guys :)
Here's a concept image I started, but since my friends who work with 3d either had no time, or had started a demon of their own, I abandoned it (but not before I flooded it with useless details and ornaments and killed all shapes in order to make it unmodelable :))
Well, here goes:

Concept demon (http://www.eg.online.bg/~morgoth/paints/demon/demon1.jpg)

Here's a detail (if someone is interested):

Demon's Head (http://www.eg.online.bg/~morgoth/paints/demon/demon-head.jpg)

I'm not posting them directly in the forum coz the images are above 100k...

Waaaoooooohhhh i'm impressed ! I love that unique style. It is so mystic, so dark. There is so much sensibility in the details, in the tiny ornaments...

The visual impression is really great i find !
Is that just Photoshop done ? or painter ?
Anyway you know you can enter the contest even in 2D...

Keep going, i'm already your fan !

10x toma :)
It's 100% photoshop hard-edged paintbrush (i never got the hang of Painter really)
As for the 2D contest - yeah, I know about it, but this image is not a painting, it's just concept - boring lighting (everything is totally flat), boring pose ("Come model me!")...
No mood, no anything... But I can probably make another one, if I find the time :)

Okay Mescalito, I have one thing to say:

I AM HEREBY DEMAINDING THAT YOU MODEL THIS.

You have to!! It's just so cool!! YOU HAVE TO MODEL IT SO THAT IT"S GLORY CAN BE COMPLETE.
Come on!!! I'm sure you can model him!! Even if you don't model him for the challenge, at least model him sometime so we can see it :) Please?

Err.. Leigh, I'm glad you liked it but.. um... well, I CAN'T model anything more complicated than a, well, rock (and not a good one, too).
I'm a 2D painter (1D more is required for modelling :) and I work mainly with Photoshop (not the no.1 modelling tool :)
Thing is, this colleague of mine, a 3d modeller/animator, told me about this challenge, and I decided to make a concept for him to model. But later he told me he had already begun work on his demon and since I had some free time I worked a little more on my daemon (whose head, according to a friend of mine, looked like Santa's :) and posted it here...
In less words: I can concept and texture and render, but can't model... Anyway, if you look some more at this image and see 'behind' the details, you'll see it doesn't really deserves modelling (I'm so ashamed of the stupid teeth-and-skull thingie)...

great work!
i wonder is there anyone who is crazy enuff to model the demon that u've drawn. i simply love it but i don't think that i'm good enuff to model ur devil. way beyond the complexity that i could imagine.

anyway, painting is one of my personal favorite too. Hope to see more of ur paintings.

demon2 (http://www.digital2d.com/paint/demon2.jpg)

Put a bit more contrast and added more colour in order to get rid of this cocroach-like look :)
Alas it's quite hopeless and these pathetic attempts won't turn a conceptual image into a paiting, so I guess I'll just stop at this point :)

10x again for all the kind replies :)

Hey Mescalito,

You've got an amazing painting there. Very reminiscent of the Magical Realist Ivan Albright, but then I immediately recalled a series by another artist that you might be interested in checking out. Paul Cadmus' "Seven Deadly Sins" series.

The detail in the chest is incredible and would present an admirable challenge in of itself, but hell, if we could bring the Alien creature to life with NURBs and some funky texture maps (for Alien:Resurrection), this character could totally be realized in the same fashion. Someone would have to commit some serious time to it though. :scream:

I really enjoy the looseness of the paint strokes in the leg region (that's just the painter in me)

I only have one insignificant nitpick remark - to me, the billy goat beard just doesn't fit the essence of the character. Perhaps because it's the only area that contains hair? I dunno, it's just a personal opinion/observation.

I'd love to see more of your work. Do you have an online portfolio?

Keep up the excellent work!

Glad you liked it, sketchguy :)
Yeah, you're absolutely right about the face - more or less everyone finds it out of place (A friend of my even described the whole thing as "moderately horrible body with Santa's head on top" :)
Since it turned out that no one would model this, I started just playing with it and many parts are just for themselves, they don't fit well together and the whole image is a mess...
Btw I'm a huge fan of calm villains (go Darth Vader!) - emotionless and quiet and wise, etc, so I didnt go for the "I'm coming to eat ya" look :)

As for my portfolio.. well, I used to be a web graphic designer for 5 years, so most of my stuff are web designs (yechhh). I have some experiments and thing for fun here:

http://www.digital2d.com/paint

Most of them are not finished pieces, just excercises for material, detail, etc. And they're quite old actually, this demon was the first thing I painted for quite a while...

Wow, very nice work, although I can only imagine being able to paint like you have, its probably safe to say we have a slight similarity in design sense, check out my character, particularily the pelvis area.:D
Impressive work Mescalito

Thanx guys!
I'm terribly short of time, so here's quite a small update...
I hope to find a couple of hours free to finish this thing

I'll probably have to make the pectorals more similar, they sure suck the way they're now...

how many layers do you end up with for this kind of stuff? do you try to seperate everything or do you just go freestyle? do you scan in paper sketches first?

don't give up on modelling if you really enjoy it, after a while it gets really easy. It doesn't however have the immediate emotional response/connection that color on canvas does, so unless you REALLY love it...

peace

I'm sorry guys that I couldn't find time to finish this... Next time I'll start earlier, to make sure I'll have at least one hour per week :)
Anyway, this concept was really boring - just some human with lotsa makeup :) No big loss in not finishing it...

produce: I used 2 layers - one for the background and one for the character... Sometimes when I want to experiment whether a more drastic change (like a big shade or sthg) will look good I add it on a separate layer and if I'm satisfied with the result I flatten the image again...
About 3D - I really prefer 2D for now, although 3D is great fun too, but don't think I'll have time/will to develop skills to model anything better than a grotesque body or head...

Again sorry to the guys who expected to see my demon finished, I'll do better for the next challenge :)
I'd really like to participate in a team with one of you guys, it will be tremendous fun!
