A 3d machine is basically the same thing as a gaming rig. You want lots of ram and a powerful 3d card. Dual or multi threaded processors will help out a lot with render times when you do batch renders. I am running a geforce 7800gtx, 1 gig of ram, and a dual core amd. I can get up to around 4 million polys in zbrush before it starts to lag, which for me is more than enough for most projects.
