View Full Version : Humble beginnings (2D)
Echarin 02-19-2007, 11:04 AM I started animating in Flash (v.8) about 3 weeks ago. Got my bible (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Animators-Survival-Kit-Principles-Stop-motion/dp/0571202284/sr=8-1/qid=1171882502/ref=pd_ka_1/202-0824294-2727846?ie=UTF8&s=books) about a week and a half ago and noticed near instant improvements (I love this book, especially the fact that it's so big I can hug it).
From the past week and a half or so (in order of creation):
Walk cycle (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a275/Puppetsj/Animations/Walky7-WIP.swf)
Another walk cycle (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a275/Puppetsj/Animations/JB_walk.swf)
Yet another walk cycle (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a275/Puppetsj/Animations/Head03.swf)
Jump test (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a275/Puppetsj/Animations/HeadJump.swf)
Something (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a275/Puppetsj/Animations/Head_jump2.swf)
My terrible efforts from 3 weeks ago (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a275/Puppetsj/Animations/Walky3.swf)
Will be updating this thread whenever I have something new to show.

walky 7 - that toe movement is a lil too much on down.
also theres something wrong wrong with the arms, maybe the arc is just too big, cant say exactly
JB - hes fine , like that buddy ;)
Head03 - weight a lil more forward
HeadJump - could take more weight, specially at the stair
HeadJump2 - comes out from teh trapez far higher then it gets in, has same speed tough. a short delay with some struggling before he falls down off the cliff would be nice too ^.^
all in all, really nice start ya got there, but ya need to work on the weight more, try to "feel" how a body would move in reality, is it light? heavy? weight is very important troughout, and you dont always have to keep the rules, exxegaration can make things more believable as well.
by the way, that last one aint that bad, its a diffrent style, but has its uses.

Thanks for the crits. So weight's my problem? Strange. I'm overweight and should actually be dieting and working out to lose weight, but in animation I need more of it.

Duh! It's so obvious, yet I failed to notice it. Of course he shouldn't come out of it higher than he gets into it. Thanks for that.
I think I'll redo some frames and make him jump higher rather than tone down his exit from the pole.

yeah weight is specially in the begining something ya need to practise, the best way is too look at refernce footage, this way you dont need to assume and think how, but you know it.

Wow! this is a very nice start. It's good seeing someone starting from the basics and in flash too! That's exactly what I did when I started. I actually still initially plan out every animation in Flash. The Animators Survival Kit is a great tool too. You're off to a very good start. Keep it up.
Lookin forward to seeing more.

Flash is more than just a starting point for me. I have no plans to go anywhere else. 2D all the way, Flash all the way (although I would love to try some truly traditional animation).

Two characters interacting (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a275/Puppetsj/Animations/Balls_Playing.swf)
This taught me something very important: keyframes are the most important frames. I had already read it in the Animator's Survival Kit, but nothing beats learning from your mistakes.

For an animation comp at another forum:

Keys, a few breakdowns and the extremes, but so far no inbetweens. Crits please.

And it's done... for the most part:

Any suggestions for improving it?
