View Full Version : Animation : crab dance
Oren Ben-Tov 02-27-2003, 03:58 PM Hi all,
Here is an in-house project from studio HandsUp we finished here recently.
We managed to train some crabs to do cool tricks :p
It took us about a month and a half working on it on and off between other projects, and was mainly created for trying out the tracking in maya.
Comments are welcome.

Very good job.
Great work with the compositing.
-DivideByZero-
is excellent, so funny...
I wanted to do something a bit like that a few years ago...but with oyster...it was called oyster act :applause:
OK...the idea is excellent...but U have some small problems on the tracking & on color/contrast comp on the crabs and shadows...
for the first one...I don't know if U can improve it, for the second sure you could tweak it on the soft U used to composite both...
I think if U want to use it as a professional demo for clients U should try to improve it and try to have it perfect...it would be a perfect visit card...

Hehehe that's cool.
Mind a little criticism? It almost works perfectly, but the shadows were sometimes too soft and had a slightly different color to shadows cast by objects the camera caught. A slightly sharper shadow and a slight reddish cast to the shadows would have come reall close to nailing it.
Gotta say, though, I love the animationo in it. I really got into it when they started clapping . heh i'm off to show this around the office. Ciao.

Thanks for the replies everyone,
I am glad you liked it :bounce:
hope will get some time in the near future to improve the shadows, foot prints and comp... and clean the beach a little.
the tracking was kind of hard cuz we didnt bother planning too much for good target points :wip:
The funny thing was us trying to remember the dance moves of the song, I made my girlfriend dance for me all day long
very nostalgic...
thanks again

nice animation. the only thing that really bothered me was the fact that the crabs werent displacing the sand, and the aliasing around the towel at the end. great concept overall though.

Very nice. No comments, as it's a finished piece.
Maybe there could be a sequel where they are interacting with people at the beach? Seeing realistic crabs at the beach acting in this way reminds me of the bar room scene in Gremlins, for some reason.
Very nice piece.
Thats so funny !!! :applause:
..make it clap..:applause: :applause: clap clap

hehe, that was funny sir! As far as the shadows go, if you check out the part where he walks over to the radio and hops up, the shadows for the radio are quite a bit sharper and the crab's would be a little sharper than that since they are closer to the ground (probably a little darker as well. So, that is why they looked too soft to me anyhow. Maybe that's what you were planning.
I liked the last animation you posted as well. Very nicely done and a massive amount of work.
Excellent!
Very creative, made me laugh - I love it :)

[i]...crabs rule :) [/B]
O.K. The animation is great but I want to point out that CRABS DON"T RULE!!!
I mean, crabs can get very itchy and bothersome without the proper medication :) Makes for a bad conversation starter on date when it comes to that point of having a night cap, if you know what I mean.;)

HAHAAAHHAA!!!
I remember when that song came out. I was like 3 or 4. Brought back those memories.
My only complaint is the "No crabs were harmed...."
Its a bit done, and considering that none of the cg crabs were hurt.
I reckon it should've beem "No crabs required therapy after listening to 80's music" lol.

I thought of a nice sequel :
The crabs are in a resturant and just before they are served they start to sing :p
There was also supposed to be a shot were the crabs walk over some girl tummy on his way to the tape.
But for some reason there arent any girls on the beach in the winter
