You can load data to start from. Create a simulation grid and emitter, open up the FFX dialog and click on "Start Simulation with Loaded Initial State" locate and choose sim data.
Although I am not sure you can re-use the sim data. To be able to load sim data the setup is going to have to be exactly the same (ie emitters, particles, grid size, settings, ect.).
Although what you can do:
Save a stripped scene file and the original sim data with just the fumefx setup and import/merge it into a different scenes. You can re-use the sim dat in this case; just locate the sim data folder and make it correspond to the output file path in the ffx dialog general tab.

if you change the path of your Fume saved data, to another saved out sequence, it will ask you if you want to change the grid to match that of the new sequence. it wont change your sim settings to match, so as long as you dont re-sim its usuable.

I have run into issues of moving the location of your sim from a local machine to network. It doesnt really like that, so keep that in mind. It might be an easy fix but i havent had the time to really figure out why.
