Hi,
This is my animatic for my short film I am doing in college. All work is done by me so far. I will be replacing the guy torturing him with an ogre type male I modeled and use a modified versoin of him for the camera character. I will also be adding recorded sounds by me later on. Please comment/crit. This is my first animation film, I have only done some walk cycles and simple animations so far in class.

Edit: Feb 27, 2007

Well I had some other people look over my first scene again, and I've had multiple comments about the bad weight of the ogre pulling the body. So I scraped the entire animation for him and looked at the new hills have eyes trailer. I basically took the same motion and stature of the guy in the trailer and applied it to my guy. Now I think this looks 100x better. I still have more to do, plus please comment.

EDIT: Feb. 26, 2007

I have been really hard at work trying to get this second scene done so I can do the third and the ending teaser then have time to go back and tweak them and add sound. I am almost done with scene 2, but I am still finding things I need to fix. But you can view it and tell me what you think.

so i am not a big animator, so dont take my words as "the only truth" :)
well it reminds me half life (the game) all those flashes..:)
anyways, things i have noticed:
when i am (the person from whose eyes we see) dragged, the person who drags, his spin (upper body) is very static, not sure if its ok or bad, but the thing i noticed.
when i am slapped to my face naturally i would suspect to wake up, not to fall asleap, cos the it shuld be like blow to head, not a "female like" slep, which i see now..

in general its a bit confoosing, hard to folow. but might be thats what u need?
well my 2 sents, ant sorry for me english.

i agree with maantas on his points, tough since its in animatic the quality of the animation is quite unimportant. for the story id make the slap a blow tough, or give the guy an e-shocker, also in the end the victim looks away and is quite passive but that little stuggling out of the chair, every person would be rather horrified in such a situation and try to escape with immense intensity, and also wouldndt look away from the source of danger, thats not natural, maybe you let him brake free his arms and pull em up in defense the last instant( too late )? and as said the strife to struggle out of the chair must be very intense, shaking from side to side, pulling at the chains to breakpoint ( either arm or chair ), there has to be a lot of movement ....
well you get my meaning. nice spooky concept by the way, the scene could be right out of a horror movie.

keep it up

Very cool idea. I really like how this is coming. I do agree that some more struggling would really help this piece though.

Hey,

Thank you so much for the insight so far. I will add more violent shakes, and I kinda like the idea of the arms breaking free at the end, and maybe have them come up to block his face and get cut that way. I will also change the slap to a big punch with his fist. Keep the comments/crits comming!

I am assuming the flashing is the equivalent of the POV character blinking. If thats the case, I would try to vary the length of the flashing by a couple of frames here and there to make them a bit more organic. You could also try a top to bottom whipe on the screen to emulate an eyelid. If you have ever been knocked out before, which unfortunately I have, things tend to go a bit blurry and fade out instead of being instant, but of course it can happen instantly as well. Waking up is usually the reverse, although sometimes that happens much quicker. Overall I like the camerawork, but i do get a bit nauseous by the end of the animatic.

Pretty good Animatic,

Hey,

Thanks for the comments. Ya Im going to try and setup 2 eyelid looking planes that come over the camera when he blinks and also setup fades within max itself (depth of field). Does anyone know of a good compositing program where u can stich movies together and do effects. Not windows movie maker ... lol. The character I am using that will be doing the torturing and using the chainsaw is this guy I made.....

He is not a zombie, i just posed him like that. Hes a ogreish type hunchback I came up with. I will start the final animation tomorrow.

aftereffects, theres a free 30day free trial with full functionality on the adobe site,
also theres fusion wich is nodebased therefore better if you have to compose and correct a lot of layers. those 2 are nice for a start and you can do pretty much anything with them.

about the eyelids, i would do them in 3d, but rather render without em then compose them in.

about the guy. dunno if the render is about final quality, if so ya need to work on the highlights, looks a lil waxy/plastic on the skin atm.

keep it up

Hi,

I will have to look into after effects. I will fix the highlights and also lower the bump mapping. I had some other people look at my current animation and he said that the ogres body was too stiff and had no weight... so idk I might redo some of it. My dad and well alot of my family also thought it was hard to follow because of the fast camera movements but i dont know. This is the most recent one.....

update!

I went back and re-did alot of the animation so now i feel it looks more realistic. I tried to get a better feeling of weight and strain on the ogre pulling the body as well as fixed camera angle and other things. Please comment/crit.

Hey!
I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but in the Teaser Trailer of "Hills Have Eyes 2" there is the exact same beginning :o)
http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox_atomic/thehillshaveeyes2/teaser_large.html --> TEASER TRAILER
So it could be a good reference for you I guest

Otherwise keep up the work! :)

Hey,

Ya thats where i sorta got the idea from. I was watching that also for reference. I went back and redid alot of stuff in the first scene because of comments I got. I am pretty much done with it except for sounds, but am still open to crits/comments. I also have gotten done alot of the main poses and some other stuff in scene 2 of 3, but still need to do alot of work. Here they are....

Scene 1 - http://files.filefront.com/ogrefinaltest5avi/;6804099;;/fileinfo.html

Scene 2 - http://files.filefront.com/scene2test3avi/;6811189;;/fileinfo.html

Hey,

Well I had more people look at the animation, and some were confused what was going on, and alot of people said the weight was wrong. So I redid all the animation in the first scene basically, at least on the ogre and some on the camera. Im happy with the weight now, but Im still trying to see what else to adjust. Im almost done with scene 2 now, but I need to exagerate some parts more. I need to then model the chainsaw and do part 3, the title and end teaser then rap it up. Comments/crits please

Hey,

Well no one seems to be looking at this, but ill keep updating. I just made my chainsaw, and might tweak the texture some more. I also worked on my second scene animation, and I think its getting close to being final. Take a look at both and tell me what you think. I think im going to finally start the last scene tomorrow and then tweak all the scenes, then do the end teaser and whatnot.

Hi,

I dont know if anyone will even look at this, but Im very close to being done now with the animation. I have pretty much all of it done, but I tweaked some things since this video compile. I want you guys to watch it and tell me what to fix if anything. I have around 2 weeks left or so to add sounds and whatnot to make it a little better. Im a modeler and not really an animator, but I think this came out quite well so far. I want to persue animation, but idk if Ill ever be an animator.
