Title: In Search Of
Name: Philip Straub
Country: USA
Software: Painter, Photoshop

Another image from the speed painting series I've been doing as of late. The goal here was to juxtapose organic structures with alien technology. Something like 3 hours on this one...with more custom vrush experimentation as part of the process.

Just like a dream. I especially like the sense of scale. You often represent giant things. The moonlight atmosphere is awesome. Great work Philip! :applause:

It looks like you've grown attached to Vyle's custom brushes( I am guessing that you are using those in you're arsenal, you may have built them, hehe). I love your choice of colors in this one. Really strong piece!

Damn, I still suck at doing speedies, LOL!

This one is absolutely beautiful too.
It's reminds me of an old grounded ship bury on an improbable ground.
Really beautiful...

hmmm, very distinctive style you have philip. Of course i miss those older artworks you did, it one in particular was a sea shell environment with a family enjoying fishing. That remains a personal Fav.

In anycase, very nice and abstract work!

Hmm, maybe it's too early in the morning for me to comment anything from a proper view but I don't get this picture.

Maybe it's a bit too alien for me. The rock formations feel abit unatural (would rocks pile up like that?). It's also hard for me to mentally justify the architecture as it seems too random, I mean why does the arch in the background end in midair when the arches in the foreground are attached to the cliff. You could seperate the midground and foreground object more and keep values more consistant.

And what's up with the BUBBLE?! I guess it could be some sort of protective glass sheating for the building but as it doesn't reflect any red lava or ground it's also confusing.

The sky and overall composition works for me though.. :)

Now I need to get some coffe, no hard feelings Philip but I've seen you do better. Perfection through pratice!

Hello Philip, nice to see some experimental painting. :)

I wonder wy so many grow attached to these rings hehe.. They seem to follow experimental styles whoever is doing it :). The stone surfaces look really good and has a very realsitic feel. I think the more abstract parts work ok in contrast to the more realistic surfaces around. I like the fact that you added som texture to some of the ringshapes, it makes the rest of them more believable. It might be a bit dark, looks ok on my lcd screen but my crt says to dark. Nice job doing this within 3 h, too many ring thingys for my taste though :/.. Good luck with your developement :)!

I love the colour palette used and after reading the thread I am no longer wondering who Philip Straub is and why people were searching for him ;) ("In Search of Philip Straub")

Wow ...very nice work man. How on earth did you do that in only 3 hours? If I hadn't have known it was done as a painting , I would have thought it was done in a 3d app. Drool worthy painting skills :applause:

I might be alone in this opinion but all I see is a slop of shapes . It's obvious you know how to paint but it just really does'nt seem to have a solid structure to me . I know it's not meant to be concept art but if someone handed this to me and said " Model this out " and not knowing anything else about the picture my reply would be " what is it " ? I mean I would know it's some kind of building or mountain sculpt ...anyways you have a lot of great technique and painting skill it just did'nt come together to me in this painting .

I love this reply...I'm not sure " a slop of shapes" is the best critique but it is nonetheless. Your opinion is valid as its your and no-one can take that away from you man but, there are all kinds of Concept Art out there. Some are meant to "build from" other are meant as visual targets, and others are meant for exploration or inspirational purposes.

Keep in mind I took about 3 hours to produce this and it was meant as an experiment..some people have responded to it and I appreciate that. In addition, not everything needs to "be something" completely tangible when held up to our real world standards. I find this type of illustration interesting as it balances between abstract and realism.

If you are interested in know "what it is" it was meant as a quick Concept exploring interesting shapes and positive negative shapes in alandscape that would ultimately make for fun flying around...thats it. If this was bought off on by the team (hypothetical) then I would have spent more time defining things further.

im feeling the textures and ambience. futristically surreal. what really makes this piece so graet is the spotaneous layout of a speedpainting with a gestrual refined compostion, great use of brushes, im inspired.

amazing piece of speedpainting, mr. Straub!
I've not yet experimented too much myself with speedpaintings, but I'm godsmacked at the amount of complexity and life you've managed to bring into this painting. No matter the painting time, it would stand out as a sweet piece of realised imagination =) wonderful atmosphere and colours as well, something you've maintained in most of your art.
inspiring, as usual
