View Full Version : Ryan Larkin died at 63
Ryan Larkin, one of Canada's most praised animators and an Oscar nominee who fell into a life of panhandling on the streets of Montreal, died Wednesday of metastasized lung cancer in Sainte-Hyacinthe, Quebec, said his manager and producer Laurie Gordon. He was 63.
After years in obscurity, Mr. Larkin was recently rediscovered by a new generation of fans and was the subject of the 2004 Oscar-winning animated short Ryan. In recent months, he had also begun working on Spare Change, a new film about his years panhandling, mainly outside Montreal's famous Schwartz's Deli.

It's amazing how an acclaimed animation genius can end up begging on the street.
Here's a Wikipedia article on the man:

Very sad ending to an amazing life. I hope that we get to see his spare change film in some form eventually.

I had a chance to see Mr Larkin at the Ottawa International Animation Festival back in '04.
They showed his Academy nominated short "Walking (http://www.nfb.ca/trouverunfilm/fichefilm.php?lg=en&id=10985&v=h)" before the (soon to be) Academy Award winning short "Ryan", by Chris Landreth.
The audience gave hm a standing ovation which he graciously accepted. Both films are outstanding works of art and I highly recommend both.
It was sad to leave the building and see Larkin with Landreth, Chris Robinson and others feeding him a 6 pack of Carling Black Label. Apparently the free booze was one of the reasons Larkin agreed to attend the festival.
I am sure he had a very difficult life. But he also had many extensions of help to get his life back on track. In his later years, these offerings came from Chris Robinson and Landreth. A lot of his hardships were by choice and self-inflicted.
Sorry to see him go but great that his animation will live on as a testament to his genius.

Ryan is probably the best CG Shortfilm I've seen.
Man, that was unexpected. I hoped that the shortfilm would be enough motivation for Ryan to come back into the world of creation. Another fabulous shortfilm would have been an amazing good-bye present.
That's really sad, really sucks.

R.I.P. Ryan..
He was amazing artist, and sadly he remained in obscurity for far too long.
Thanks to Chris Landret' Ryan I was introduced to the wonderful works of this artist, and his struggle against his personal demons.
May he rest in peace.

Chris Landreth came to our local siggraph chapter back in december. He showed Ryan and also told us Ryan started working on a project of his own.. Its so sad to hear that he passed away.

does any one know of a link to walking that is good. I know there was one previously but it doesn't either stream well or just a few screencaps. Thanks I appreciate it :)

Very sad to hear. I've only just recently come to know and appreciate his work. I love Chris' animation "Ryan" too. It's a shame he was not appreciated as he should have been.
